Can a Christian be possessed by a demon? Can Christians Be Demonized?

While the Bible never makes an explicit statement about whether or not a Christian can be demon-possessed, biblical truths make it very clear that a Christian cannot be demon-possessed. Being possessed by, or influenced and plagued by, a demon are two completely different things. Demonic possession brings with it complete control over a person's thoughts and / or actions (Matthew 17: 14-18; Luke 4.33-35; 8.27-33). In the case of a demonic temptation or influence, however, a person is spiritually attacked or sinful behavior is attempted. Remember that in any section on spiritual warfare, there is never a call to cast out demons (Ephesians 6: 10-18). Believers are encouraged to resist the devil (James 4: 7; 1 Peter 5: 8-9), not to cast him out.

The Holy Spirit dwells in every Christian (Romans 8: 9-11; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19). Certainly the Holy Spirit would not allow a demon to possess the same person in whom He resides. It is unthinkable that God would allow one of His children, whom He bought with the blood of Christ (1 Peter 18-19) and who thus became a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), from one Demon is ruled and controlled. Of course we are at war with Satan and his demons, but the warmonger does not come from within. The apostle John explains: "You are of God, children, and have overcome them, because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world" (1 John 4: 4). Who is the one in us The Holy Spirit. Who is that in the world? Satan and his demons. So it follows: The believer has overcome the world of demons and the demonic possession of a believer cannot be biblically proven.

Often times, personal experiences are cited as evidence of a Christian's obsession. Allegedly a Christian was seen who was apparently controlled by a demon. However, it is incredibly important that personal experiences not affect our interpretation of the Bible. Rather, we should see our personal experiences through the filter of Scripture (2 Timothy 3: 16-17). When we see someone who we believe to be a Christian and who is also exhibiting demonic behavior, it should cause us to question his or her beliefs. Our position on whether or not a Christian can be demon possessed should not depend on observation. Maybe someone is really a Christian and is being attacked by a demon, which may have led to psychological problems. But still: Our experiences have to stand up to the test of writing, and not the other way around.
