Benedict Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976 in London to the actors Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton. He attended two private schools in London, Brambletye and Harrow School. Benedict Cumberbatch began acting on the latter. Before settling on the University of Manchester enrolled in Drama, Cumberbatch went to Tibet for a year of voluntary social service to teach English. After graduating in Manchester, he took further acting classes at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

His involvement in the theater and his first TV work went hand in hand. His outstanding work includes the biopic Hawking - The Search for the Beginning of Time, in which Benedict Cumberbatch played the famous physicist Stephen Hawking and was promptly nominated for the BAFTA TV Award as best actor and won the Golden Nymph in Monaco.

In Stuart: A Life Backwards, Benedict Cumberbatch starred alongside Tom Hardy, with whom he also starred in Lady King A's Spy, directed by Tomas Alfredson. Cumberbatch has been on television since 2010 in the remake of Sherlock Holmes as The Master Detective, which earned him another BAFTA nomination and the Broadcasting Press Guild Award. Other notable films that Benedict Cumberbatch has worked on include Atonement, Four Lions and Companions of Steven Spielberg. Directed by Peter Jackson, Benedict Cumberbatch appears twice in the Hobbit films: as the dragon Smaug and as the Necromancer.

At the 2014 Emmys, Benedict Cumerbatch was honored for his star role as Sherlock. Specifically, he won the trophy for best leading actor in a mini-serie / TV film for his role in Sherlock - Season 3, Episode 3: His Last Vow. A year earlier he played the role of villain Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. He was nominated for an Oscar for the first time for his acting performance in The Imitation Game, but lost the gold trophy to Eddie Redmayne. In the Marvel film adaptation of Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the title role of the evil-fighting wizard. (JD)
