How does something get vintage?
What is vintage
You can read the word vintage everywhere right now. Vintage look, vintage decoration, vintage furniture, vintage make-up, vintage shop - yes, the word vintage has even crept into us, namely in our article about vintage jeans. It seems like everything is geared towards vintage right now. But what exactly is vintage?
Is vintage just a fashion term that has been recreated for a term that is already familiar? The best example of this are crop tops, which are now called cropped tops. Is vintage also such a term or does it have a completely different meaning?
The term has been appearing more and more recently and sooner or later you just have to come across it in the age of the internet. But only a few know what is actually behind the term. So that you do not belong to the ignorant, today we take a very close look at the word vintage and find out its meaning for you. We'll also tell you all the information about what vintage is all about and how you can best wear the cool vintage look.
What does vintage mean?
In the meantime, nobody dares to ask what vintage is anyway, because the term appears all the time and everywhere. The term vintage originally comes from English and has nothing to do with its current meaning. The term comes from the wine sector, where it described a particularly good vintage and thus a particularly fine wine.
In general, however, vintage is also translated as “old-fashioned”, “classic” or “from a certain time”. This makes it clear that the vintage parts are not new or from today, but from days gone by.
You may already have an inkling of what vintage is derived from: Something special that did not exist in other times. Which brings us back to today's meaning. Vintage are things that come from bygone days, but which still have a certain value today and are highly coveted by many.
The best example here are vintage bags, which do not lose value but increase in value, especially if they are well preserved and have been manufactured in a limited edition. There is the same hype about vintage jeans, which are just as rare and therefore just as popular.
In general, vintage can be anything today, which is why there are so many areas: furniture, fashion, accessories, jewelry, cars beauty - everything can be vintage, i.e. preserved in its original form from bygone times.
Vintage and retro are often confused
It is also important to know that not everything that looks old is vintage. You have to learn to differentiate between really old pieces that are actually called vintage and parts that look old or are trimmed to be old.
Things that just look old and are made by the manufacturer are not vintage parts, but retro parts. Retro design is a design that looks like it was actually bought new. The best example of this are used look jeans that are not actually old but want to be viewed as such.
In general, parts are referred to as vintage if they come from the 30s to 70s. Of course there are also vintage clothing from the 20s, but at some point these are no longer in good condition. Vintage looks from the 80s are also available, but everything that comes after is not vintage, but current.
Real vintage items, whether clothing, furniture or jewelry, can be found mainly at flea markets, in secondhand shops or even in special vintage boutiques that deal with the topic and buy well-preserved, mostly high-quality fashion in order to sell it again at high prices. A whole market has now emerged for this.
But why is the vintage look so popular right now?
Quite simply: people have always longed to go back to the good old days. At some point some people actually started to wear their old clothes, to find vintage cars good or to equip their apartment with old furniture. The trend was born. The now well-known vintage movement started in England in the 1990s. One wanted to give the ever faster life a deceleration, to go back to old values and to let the internet fall into oblivion a little.
Small subcultures have emerged that deal with old fashion, reapply it instead of throwing it into the used clothing collection and breathing new life into it. Many designers liked this so much that at some point they brought the remnants of their old collections onto the market, which then all cracks. It is practically a new, old trend that is convincing in different styles.
In this regard, Julia Roberts, who wore a dress that was already 20 years old at an Academy Awards, is unforgettable. Up until that point it was unthinkable to wear something old on stage, but Julia Roberts looked so good at her performance that many stars soon followed suit. Since then, vintage items, especially clothing, have been in great demand.
Today vintage fashion is an integral part of current fashion. It also shapes the current fashion, which becomes clear again and again. For example, Levi's recently launched a revival of the original 501, breaking all records.
The vintage style in detail
But what exactly characterizes the vintage style? What is special about the look? Popular vintage parts are those parts that are still in good condition. They shouldn't necessarily be faded or broken, but have a slightly used look. Faded jeans of old models, dresses from the 20s or 50s, famous handbags that are never out or pearl jewelry from the 30s are very much in demand in fashion.
But what a vintage part actually looks like depends on the respective era. Petticoat skirts, dotted dresses, Charlston dresses, Peter Pan collars on blouses or even the 501 Levis Jeans are popular with vintage lovers.
It is nice for every vintage fan if the clothes can be found in the respective trendy colors of the epoch, because every viewer knows immediately which year it is. The 60s with their hippie patterns and bell-bottoms, the 80s with their metallic looks or the fringed Charlston dresses from the 20s are the style for the respective epochs.
With the vintage parts, especially in fashion, you can travel back in time and feel completely at ease. Anything can, nothing has to be done and so the looks from days gone by are more in demand than ever.
