How is the relationship between Thanos and Ronan
Could Ronan have defeated Thanos?
Could Ronan have defeated Thanos if Ronan were armed with the Infinity Gem of Power? We'll never find out officially. Ronan the Prosecutor was destroyed by the Power Gem in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).
- HOWEVER: With that answer officially out of the way, let's speculate based on your Canon comic iterations as the primary source material that MIGHT be used to answer.
For the impatient, I'll save you the time and assure you that even with an infinite jewel of power, Ronan the Prosecutor would have NO CHANCE against Thanos of Titan.Thanos took all of the Infinity gems from their previous owners, except for Adam Warlock in Canon Marvel Earth-616.
- During the Blood and Thunder- History receives Thor Odinson the Infinity Gem of Power and rages through the Marvel Universe. Thanos and Thor mix it in Silver Surfer Vol. 1.3, Issue 88. Thor, who is significantly more powerful than Ronan with the universal weapon, has now been further improved with the gemstone Power. Thanos was unimpressed.
Thor plus Power Gem should be synonymous to everyone on the receiving end of Mjolnir.Thanos has a bloody nose and is smiling.Creepy.
A small background between the two characters shows the "story of the tape". Ronan is a man (or in this case a Kree), Thanos is almost a god (or a god-like being of immense physical strength). Given the range between the two starting points, Ronan never stood a chance.
Ronan the Prosecutor
Ronan the Accuser in the canonical Marvel Universe, Earth-616, is one of the best warriors in the Kree empire . A realm of thousands of worlds that has been militaristically conquered by a species on which the Celestials have also genetically experimented. The Kree, who lived in the Magellenic Cloud, were one of the great races of the Milky Way, contested by their greatest rivals, the shape-shifting Skrulls, and often rivaled the Shiar and the Reptilian Badoon.
The Kree are a dimorphic breed that comes in two colors, one blue-skinned and the other pink-skinned. Outwardly, the Kree resemble humanity with bilateral symmetry and opposing thumbs. Internally, the Kree are stronger, denser, and more physically resilient than humans, and can lift five tons without the aid of technology. Their senses are sharper than a person's and their intellectual abilities are the same or maybe slightly greater due to their technologically advanced society.
Despite the evolutionary advantages of the Kree over humanity, the Celestials viewed it as an evolutionary impasse: they had developed their physical and mental faculties as much as possible and eliminated any genetic variability in the species. The Kree were as perfect as a humanoid could be and had reached a plateau of evolution.
To keep improving, the Kree would use technology to enhance their physical and mental abilities through cybernetic implants and exo-armor technologies. The best Kree warriors used armored suits that could increase their lifting capacity from five (5) tons to ten (10) tons. Their armored suits gave them resistance to energy weapons, enhanced senses, and the ability to interact with Kree technologies.
The most elite Kree warriors would become prosecutors and be given exo-skeletal armor that could lift eighty (80) tons and allow the prosecutor to project powerful explosions of electromagnetic energy.
The elite class of warriors called Accusers was seen as the pinnacle of Kree fighting skill. Tirelessly trained, cybernetically improved and given access to the most powerful Kree multi-weapons, the universal weapon. This device was able to perform energy beams, force fields, matter manipulation and flight. The weapon has a built-in failsafe: only accusers in their armor can use it safely.
Ronan was the elite of the elite. He was the most famous of the Kree accusers and was considered one of the finest warriors the Kree had ever produced. His reputation as a tactical and strategic genius was unmatched in the history of the Kree. When the Kree had to defeat an enemy or win a victory, Ronan was undefeated.
With such an elite pedigree, thousands of battles, incredible weapons, and the power of the Kree Armada behind him, Ronan proved to be nearly invincible until the fall of the Kree Empire from the wave of annihilation and the subsequent rule of the Kree Empire by the brutes.
Mad Titan, Thanos
Thanos was a member of a humanoid species called Eternals . The Eternals were also a heavenly project designed to bring forth metahuman potential (for a reason as yet unknown). Thanos was the son of the leader of the titanic sect of the Eternals. A schism had formed between the Zuras-led Earth Eternals and the Mentor-led Titanian Eternals. The group of the Eternals, led by Mentor, left Earth and built a colony of planets on Saturn's moon Titan with their strength.
- The Eternals seemed like humans, bilaterally like with opposing thumbs. The similarity ends there. The Eternals are able to absorb cosmic energy in their cells and release it in various ways. When at rest, all Eternals can lift ten tons without effort. Their bodies are much stronger, faster, more resilient and heal faster than those of a human, even without the use of their cosmic energy. Their senses are sharper and sharper than those of a human being and their intellectual capacity is far above that of the average human being.
In addition to their natural resilience, all Eternals can channel cosmic energy for superhuman achievements. Each Eternal can have different skills based on personal training and preferences. These benefits include super speed, flight, increasing invulnerability, increasing strength, projecting energy from a distance, mental powers and manipulation of matter. The most demanding and well trained with these powers can use them all with equal ease. As mentors and zuras, the Eternals have few equals who use these skills.
While the range of skills varies widely for each Eternal, they have proven to be a match for most modern meta-humans on Marvel Earth, with a speed and strength as great as Thor, Iron Man, and for short Time also the Hulk. The versatility of their powers has even secured one or two of them honorary roles among the most powerful heroes on earth, the Avengers. See: Circe.
Of all the Titanian Eternals, none is synonymous with the most powerful of them, often referred to as The Mad Titan, Thanos. Thanos is a mutant among the Eternals who was born with Deviant Syndrome and who increases his physical abilities and his mental instability. Thanos has always had a lust for power and has expanded his skills well beyond his brothers. His physical strength is not reached by the Eternals. It can lift a hundred tons or more. He has stood from head to toe at the same time as Thor, Iron Man and The Thing and easily asserted himself. This without any form of enlargement or manipulation of the cosmic energy.
It is also believed that it was further enhanced with the help of extraterrestrial cybernetic technology, which gives it even greater physical durability and resilience. He was hit by Thor's hammer Mjolnir and was unimpressed.
While Thanos rarely uses his energy projection skills, they are pretty impressive. He is able to project energy out of his eyes and wrap his hands in an energy field capable of destroying any matter that touches them.
Despite his incredible physical abilities, Thanos' greatest asset is his unsurpassed intellect. He's scoured the galaxy and learned whatever he could, from whomever he'd teach it. He is a master of the alien technology that has enabled him to fight the most powerful beings in the universe such as the aliens, the elders of the universe, and even Galactus. His ingenious intellect has even tapped into mystical powers that allow him to communicate with forces like eternity and to court the conceptual entity known as death.
While the Thanos of the Marvel Cinematic Universe likely won't have this ability, in the comics Thanos is exposed from the realm of death, making him functionally immortal. Admittedly, he was extremely long-lived as an Eternal, but at the moment he can by no means die.
If these two men met despite his strategic and military training, Ronan would have undone before he started.
Thanos surpasses Ronan in purely physical abilities. Even with the universal weapon, Ronan cannot inflict enough damage on Thanos to gain the upper hand. Thanos is incredibly damage resistant, even without using his innate energies to improve. That doesn't mean he can't be hurt. It just means he won't stay down.
The infinity gem could make this more difficult as it would significantly increase Ronan's power, but since he probably has little control over the gem due to the protective properties of his armor, Thanos would turn his attention to this armor. Ronan relies on his technology to win against Thanos. Mad Titan knows this and would focus his efforts on removing Ronan from his technology.
Thanos doesn't fight fair and is known to use deception to get access to what he wants. He manages to obtain all of the infinity gems from the elders of the universe (powerful last survivors of various species who maintain their existence by engaging with their obsessions) through threat, deception, or good old-fashioned brute force.
He never gives up an advantage to an enemy unless he already has a plan to defeat that enemy. Even if Ronan ended up with the Infinity Gem, it was because Thanos allowed it and already knew how to counter it.
Thanos is a great bastard, trickster, chess master, manipulator; He plays the game of takeover on a level seldom found in the Marvel Universe. Thanos is the Eternal who has managed to gain the power of the infinity gems not just once but twice and gain control over technologies capable of destroying all of Marvel reality on at least three different occasions .
Ronan is powerful, he's relentless, he's impressive. In the end, he's still just a Kree. Complemented by nearly invincible technology, supported by one of the most incredible armed forces in the Marvel Universe. Against an alien army, Ronan is the Kree's accuser, and he must fight alongside him.
But against Thanos he is a man who fights against a force of nature. Thanos is a being whose willpower drove him to destroy half the universe in order to get what he wanted.
Ronan never stood a chance.
Jim Starlin makes this point clear in the graphic novel Thanos: The Infinity Revelation, when Thanos beats Ronan handily and hardly breaks a sweat.
