More and more investors want to invest money sustainably. The stock exchange operator Six is therefore launching a new index.

There are still some issues with sustainability in the Swiss financial center. For example, banks, insurance companies and pension funds are doing too little to combat global warming. The Federal Office for the Environment recently criticized this in a report. But the federal government as a supervisor and the financial center players themselves have an ambitious goal: They want to make Switzerland the leading location for sustainable finance.

In the industry today, sustainability is a hot topic, says Mirjam Staub-Bisang, Switzerland boss of Blackrock, the largest asset manager in the world, which also offers investment solutions for many Swiss pension funds: “We are at a tipping point, one will be others soon to follow. We are no longer far from sustainable investments as the investment standard. "

Green investing is trendy

As head of Blackrock Switzerland, she has found in practice that many pension funds are now paying more attention to the environment and social issues when choosing their financial investments.

Sustainable investing is a growth market, as the latest figures from the Swiss Sustainable Finance Association show. According to this, sustainable financial investments in Switzerland have risen to around 1200 billion francs, a third of all assets under management in Switzerland.

The exchange operator SIX now also wants to do its part. Today it launched a package of new market indices for stocks and bonds based on so-called ESG criteria. The English "ESG" stands for the environment, social issues and good corporate governance.

Companies that generate more than 5 percent of their turnover with armaments, competitions, genetic engineering, nuclear energy, coal, oil sands or tobacco, for example, are excluded according to these criteria. Companies that pollute the environment are also kicked out.

Only the worst are not in the new index

Currently, of the slightly more than 200 Swiss stocks in the SPI, a good 70 have not made it into the sustainable index. Christian Bahr, Head of Index Business at SIX, says: "Companies that have a major negative impact on the environment, society or governance aspects are excluded."

In other words: only the worst polluters or armaments makers stay outside. Christian Bahr emphasizes: With the new indices, SIX has responded to the increased interest of investors and asset managers.

Sustainable investment becomes cheaper

So far, such sustainability indices have been missing for the broad Swiss investment universe, confirms Mirjam Staub-Bisang from Blackrock. "That is why I think that it is precisely these indices on bonds and stocks that fill a significant gap and are sure to be in high demand by investors."

A major plus point of the new indices is that sustainable investments tend to be cheaper. Because it makes it easier for product manufacturers to create the appropriate investment vehicles. As a result, they also demand fewer fees from investors. This is made possible, for example, by so-called index funds.

“An index product that follows the sustainable index will make sustainable investments cheaper,” says Staub-Bisang. Which in turn should mean that - thanks to the new SIX indices - even more pension funds and other cost-conscious large investors will switch to sustainability.

A good trend towards sustainability. Now it would be great if the pension funds also invested 1. in index funds and 2. in such sustainable funds.

Today, the term "sustainability" is misused for anything and everything. Above all, ecological interests are systematically trumped by economic and social interests.
