Is there a temporary color for cars

Silver wins!

Which color do new car buyers in Germany choose? Is there a trend color? The data shows a clear trend: silver and gray are still ahead. But more and more drivers are turning to white for their new cars.

First place in the choice of color for new cars is gray / silver. Every third new car hits the road in this color. This means that gray / silver has been in the top position of all car colors since 2000, with a brief interruption from 2011 to 2015, when “black” temporarily managed to gain a wafer-thin lead. Gray / silver has been on the rise again since 2016, while black only has a share of just under a quarter this year. (2020: 24 percent, 2010: 30 percent. 2000: 19 percent).

Third place in 2020 goes to the color white. The proportion of new car registrations with this color has grown steadily over the past 20 years: from 4 percent in 2000 to almost 12 percent in 2010, and currently on
21 percent.

The dominance of the colors black-white-gray / silver was not always so pronounced. 20 years ago their share was only 56 percent. At that time, every fourth new car buyer chose the color blue. By 2010, the proportion of cars with blue paint dropped to 11 percent and has remained constant since then. In 2020, the calming blue will take fourth place on the color hit list.

The color red is also still desired by many, with 7 percent of all new car registrations in 2020: 5th place.

The other colors such as green, yellow, brown, orange and purple are rather rare, together they only have a share of 5 percent.

When making a color decision, many new car buyers are apparently already thinking of reselling in a few years' time and calculate the best value with a color that is in the black, white and gray / silver spectrum. The choice of color is thus subject to a self-reinforcing effect. We are excited to see what the next year will bring.

The evaluation by the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) is based on current data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). All new car registrations in Germany up to November 2020 are taken into account.
