Why did Windows Vista fail

How to fix (almost) every bug

What should you do if the Windows update fails, which may result in security gaps and the monthly updates are not installed? One option would be to manually install one of the many update packs that are circulating on the Internet and that combine the hotfixes and patches provided by Microsoft in one installer. But that does not solve the real problem, at the latest with the next routine update a month later it will reappear.

Microsoft now offers its own tool to solve many Windows update problems. This is a script that has been downloaded almost 400,000 times since July 2017 and is also updated regularly by Microsoft. The script is called "Reset Windows Update Agent" and is available here. The tool can be used with the following operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 10 Insider Preview.

The tool ends up on the computer as a 750 kilobyte ZIP file ResetWUEng.zip, which you should first unzip. The script is called "ResetWUEng.cmd" and must be started with administrator rights. To do this, right-click on the file and then select "Start as administrator" in the context menu. After the disclaimer, which must be confirmed with "y" for "yes", a menu appears which presents common functions that can help in solving Windows update problems. After entering "2" and pressing the Enter key, all Windows update components are reset and the service is restarted. This may take several minutes. Otherwise, the script can also be used to delete the temporary Windows files or to scan the protected system files. The tool can also be used to reset the Winsocket settings.

There is not enough free space on the Windows drive. If the drive is about to fill up, free some space. The guide "Make your PC faster: Clean up Windows, memory and hard drives" will help you.

Support for Windows XP has already been discontinued, so Microsoft does not publish any more updates here. For Vista, the time will come on April 11, 2017. Windows 7 will still receive security updates until January 14, 2020, but no more new functions. Microsoft only provides full support for Windows 10 (and 8). This is how the switch to Windows 10 works. The changeover is still possible free of charge until July 29, 2016.

Incorrect flight mode: With Windows 10 it can happen that WLAN works, but the flight mode still appears to be activated on the surface. This means that you can surf the net, but the Windows update does not work. To check and fix this, click on the speech bubble in the lower right corner of the tray (next to the clock) to open the Action Center. If Airplane Mode is enabled here, click once or twice until the icon is no longer highlighted in color. Then it is actually switched off and updates work again (thanks to our reader Florian Ebert for the tip).
