She died at the age of 100: "Titanic" star Gloria Stuart is dead

"Titanic" actress Gloria Stuart is dead. She died at the age of 100 on Monday night at her home in Los Angeles.

Her daughter Sylvia Thompson confirmed this to the "Los Angeles Times". The actress had suffered from lung cancer for five years.

Her grandson, Benjamin Stuart Thompson, said his grandmother died while she slept in their Los Angeles home.

Stuart received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the aged Titanic survivor Rose Calvert in James Cameron's 1997 Hollywood film. Stuart was then 87 years old. To date, she is the oldest actress to have been nominated for the most coveted film award in Hollywood. Her British colleague Kate Winslet played the role of the young rose.

The Californian, who was born Gloria Stewart in Santa Monica in 1910, made her film debut in the 1930s. Among other things, she was seen in the horror film "The House of Horror" by Boris Karloff. Up until “Titanic”, however, it was only rarely occupied for years.

“I knew the role I wanted and had been waiting for all these years had finally come. I could literally taste the old rose ”, wrote the actress in her autobiography“ Gloria Stuart: I Just Kept Hoping ”(1999).

In 1933, Stuart was a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild, the union for actors in the United States. In addition to her daughter, the book author Sylvia Thompson, Stuart has four grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
