How does the deposit work on Airbnb?

Deposits can be requested by either Airbnb or hosts. Airbnb security deposit requests are based on the properties of a property and / or the time of booking. Whether or not a deposit is required never depends on a person's race, nationality, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, or age.

Airbnb's security deposit requests

Two days before the start of your stay, an authorization for the deposit amount will be made on your payment method. You won't be charged - the authorization just means that you can only access the blocked amount once the authorization has been revoked. For example, if you are paying with a credit card with a total credit limit of $ 5,000 and a deposit of $ 500 is required, your credit card limit will be $ 4,500 until authorization is removed.

If there is no property damage during your stay, we will release the blocked $ 500 14 days after you check out or before the next guest checks in. Your bank may take 3 to 12 business days to process the approval of the funds. If it turns out that we cannot authorize the deposit amount, you will be notified by email and you will then have twelve hours to try another payment method. If that doesn't work either, we will cancel your booking and you will receive a refund.

You should make sure that you have enough credit on your payment method to cover the deposit. (If you are unable to do this, Airbnb is not responsible for any related fees, including overdraft fees.)

Deposit requests by the host

Some hosts require a deposit for their accommodation. The amount between $ 100 and $ 5,000 is set by the host, not Airbnb. If you book a listing as a guest with a deposit required by the host, you will be shown the corresponding amount before you make your booking.

Security deposits required by the host differ from security deposits required by Airbnb in that no authorization is applied to your payment method. Guests will only be charged if a host claims their deposit. Depending on what was damaged, the amount the host requests may or may not match the amount of the security deposit.

In the event that a host makes a claim on the deposit, it will be processed according to the terms of the host guarantee. Airbnb's Host Guarantee is a program that provides accommodation hosts with protection against property damage of up to $ 1 million. As part of the program, hosts must document the damaged or missing items and request compensation from the guest through our secure mediation center. This must be done within 14 days of the guest checking out or before the next guest checking in (whichever is earlier). If the guest is unwilling or unable to provide the compensation, the host can turn on Airbnb.

Before hosts ask for a security deposit, be aware that not all property damage caused by guests is covered by the host's warranty. Basic cleaning work, damage caused by normal wear and tear and damage of a non-material nature, such as B. Fines for smoking and breaking house rules.

This is how security deposits work when there is a problem

If you have a problem during your stay, the Airbnb and host security deposit claims process is the same. A host can report an incident and claim part or all of the security deposit within 14 days of check-out or before a new guest checks in, whichever comes first.

Note: All payments, including deposits, should always be processed through Airbnb. You should never process payments outside of the Airbnb website. Learn more about what to do if you're asked to make a payment outside of the Airbnb website.
