The left and the Greens are now calling for a stop to all arms deliveries to Turkey. Both parties are also calling for economic pressure and are proposing to discontinue the so-called Hermes guarantees, which are intended to protect German exporting companies from losses due to non-payments from their foreign business partners.

In 2018, Turkey was the country after Russia that received the highest amount from the state treasury: 1.78 billion euros. In the first eight months of this year it was already 789 million euros.

"That the Turkish despotism is supported with the taxpayer's money is unbearable," said the deputy left faction leader Sevim Dagdelen of the dpa. This "madness" must finally be over. Green leader Annalena Baerbock told the editorial network Germany (RND): "President Erdogan must understand that his domestic and foreign policy escalations will also have noticeable negative consequences for Turkey itself."

The left is even calling for all financial aid for Turkey to be cut - including the billions in EU grants from the refugee pact with Turkey and aid in connection with Turkey's candidacy for EU membership. For this alone, the EU has paid 633 million euros in the past two years.

The CDU chairman and defense minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer warned Turkey against permanently occupying northern Syria. "If there are indications that Turkey is really planning to stay in Northern Syria as a kind of occupying power for the long term, then we have to give a clear answer. That won't work," she said at the Junge Union's Germany Day in Saarbr├╝cken.
