Which is better Mozilla or Google Chrome

Web

Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox belong to the two most popular Internet browsers on PCs and are therefore also the most common browsers. Both tools are also available for smartphones and as portable versions, so that you can use both browsers on the go on notebooks or on other computers without installation. This offers the possibility, for example, of synchronizing browser settings and favorites across devices without third-party software.

Since Microsoft has, so to speak, discontinued Internet Explorer and introduced a new browser in Windows 10 with Microsoft Edge (which has been running on Chromium since the beginning of 2020), more and more users are looking for an alternative. Here the choice mostly falls on Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

We took a closer look at the two browsers. According to Statista market researchers, the current (as of January 2020) global market leader is Google Chrome with a 68.8 percent market share, followed by Mozilla Firefox with 9.9 percent. Microsoft Internet Explorer has dropped to 3.7 percent and the Edge browser is currently 4.7 percent. There are of course different sources of market share, but in general Firefox and Google Chrome are at the top of the list when it comes to a new browser.

Google Chrome - a data octopus?

There are still a lot of rumors that the privacy in Google Chrome is worse compared to other browsers. However, this is no longer the case in the current versions. Far less data is tracked than with the first versions of Google Chrome, and no more than with other browsers. Google is certainly one of the fastest, if not the fastest browsers out there. The developers publish new versions of Chrome and Firefox at regular intervals. This also closes security gaps quickly.

Most of the functions of the two browsers are almost identical. It is now taken for granted that a browser has an intelligent search field that is used to enter Internet addresses, but also as a search field for Internet research. Both browsers naturally support Google search, but also other search options. Both browsers also offer different interfaces, called "themes". This allows the browser's standard window to be changed individually. In addition, both browsers support an extension with add-ons. The corresponding options are in under the menu item Options to find.

Many versions and functions in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is available for Windows, Linux and macOS in 32-bit and 64-bit. Google also provides a version for smartphones and tablets. Numerous functions are automatically integrated in the browser itself. In this way, PDF files can be displayed directly in the browser without the need for additional software. Google and external developers provide numerous add-ons via the internal Chrome Web Store.

But this also applies to Mozilla Firefox. In general, it can be assumed that almost every add-on for Firefox is also available for Google Chrome, and vice versa, or there are alternatives. Google Chrome allows you to log in with a Google account. If users log into Google Chrome on multiple devices with the same account, they can synchronize settings and favorites quickly and easily. This is also possible with Mozilla Firefox, but more functions are available with a Google account. The add-ons can also be synchronized between PCs and functions such as Gmail and other services can be used.

High performance and stability in Google Chrome

Google Chrome also owes its high performance to the ability to start and manage multiple processes. The individual tabs are started in their own processes. This increases the performance and the stability. In addition, individual websites on open tabs do not interfere with the other tabs. If a website crashes, the other tabs can still be used without any problems. Individual tabs can be closed in the internal Google Chrome task manager. You start this with Shift + Esc or via the menu at More tools.

Security in Google Chrome

By default, Google Chrome is now very safe and is always one of the best browsers in the test field in various tests. If that's not enough, you can install additional add-ons that make the browser even more secure. Since new versions can be installed automatically during operation, even inexperienced users can always work with the latest version of the browser. The browser therefore not only has a very large and useful range of functions, but also has a very good level of security. Like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome has a spam blocker and a private mode.

All functions can be expanded with add-ons. Functions such as JavaScript can be deactivated in Google Chrome. In Mozilla Firefox, this is only possible with add-ons, but more comprehensive. The two add-ons Ghostery and NoScript, for example, are useful for this. Flash and other interactive website areas can also be slowed down quite reliably in Google Chrome. To do the same for Mozilla Firefox, add-ons are necessary. Google Chrome has its own flash player that is separate from the system. This protects the PC from dangerous flash code. The player is updated at regular intervals with Google Chrome.

Firefox and Chrome both have password management. Unfortunately, this is not so secure in Google Chrome. Here Mozilla Firefox is superior, as the passwords can be protected by a master password. Firefox and Google Chrome both have rudimentary protection against malware and phishing sites.

Mozilla Firefox, the antagonist of Internet Explorer

Mozilla Firefox has become known as a direct antagonist to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. However, the developers are now trying to keep up with Google Chrome with numerous innovations and functions.

There are also numerous add-ons for Firefox that significantly expand the functionality of the browser. Due to its history, Mozilla Firefox is still easily on par with Google Chrome. Firefox also offers more options for customization. In addition, Firefox shows its advantages with independent and highly secure browser solutions such as the Tor Browser.

In addition, Firefox offers a download accelerator, video accelerator, and hardware accelerator. Such functions are missing in Chrome, but Google Chrome is certainly no slower than Mozilla Firefox. In terms of system load, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are on par.

Easy to use even in Mozilla Firefox

Regarding the operation, Mozilla Firefox allows the setting of abbreviations, which is not easily possible in Google Chrome. As with Google Chrome, users can also synchronize passwords, bookmarks and history using their own account in Mozilla Firefox. With Google Chrome, however, users still have the advantage of being able to access other functions such as Gmail or YouTube with their Google account.

Since Mozilla Firefox is independent of other software applications, many settings are easier to set in the browser than with Google Chrome. Of course, Google is interested in luring users to its own pages and services as much as possible. Firefox, for example, makes it much easier to configure the search.

Google is used by default, as is Yahoo and Bing, but also websites such as Amazon.de, Wikipedia, and the translation service Leo. The secure and low-surveillance search engine DuckDuckGo is also already integrated. Settings can be adjusted quickly and easily using the search field. Other search engines can also be connected. Of course, both browsers allow with CTRL + F start a local text search on the current website, the corresponding text fields are automatically marked in the browser window. As in Google Chrome, a PDF viewer is already integrated in Mozilla Firefox.

Security in Mozilla Firefox

As with Google Chrome, the security of Mozilla Firefox is now more than adequate. The developers regularly publish new versions of the browser and close security gaps. Many users prefer Firefox because they distrust corporations like Google or Microsoft. Mozilla Firefox is therefore still suitable as an underdog solution. One advantage in terms of security is the ability to secure the password management with a master password. This function is not available in Google Chrome. However, the function must first be activated in the options.

Firefox has the advantage of having a huge number of add-ons. Above all, there are numerous security add-ons with which the security of the browser can be configured even more flexibly than with Google Chrome. Although there are many security functions in Google Chrome that must first be installed in Mozilla Firefox, in most cases there are more options for controlling security with the respective add-ons.

Conclusion

Google Chrome shows its advantages mainly through its high speed and ease of use. Mozilla Firefox, on the other hand, is more flexible to adapt. The security is quite similar, but the password management in Firefox is a bit more trustworthy. Both browsers offer a portable version with which you can also use the browser on other computers. (fm)
