UX Designer Interview Questions: What To Look For

First of all, it is always a good idea to start the conversation with the candidates for the position as UX Designer by evaluating their previous projects. Take a look at their portfolio beforehand to see if the candidate's design style suits your company.
You can also ask your candidates tasks and personal questions. Where do you get your inspiration and motivation from? Also, how do you stay up to date with innovative design trends? Do you also deal with design topics in your free time? All of these questions can be indicators of whether candidates not only deal superficially with the job, but have a passion for their work.

Situation-related questions

  • Tell us about your training. Did you study design?
  • What is your current occupation? What are you working on right now?
  • Which of your works in your portfolio are you particularly proud of? Why?
  • Tell me about your training. Which aspect did you like the most?
  • Tell me about the idea behind one of your projects. How did you go about it?
  • Tell me about a project that didn't go according to plan. How did you solve problems that came up?
  • Do you have a side project that you would like to tell us about?

Job-specific questions

  • How would you define UX design?
  • Can you tell me something about the terms information architecture, interaction design, usability and user research?
  • When should one focus on one of these areas?
  • Please describe a classic user experience process. Would this process be different depending on the type of project?
  • How do you know if your design is working for the user?
  • Tell us about target groups, how you research them and how you can incorporate this research into your work.
  • How do you go about user testing?
