MBA degree - what is it?

The Master of Business Administration, or MBA for short, is a so-called postgraduate degree that provides you with know-how for all important management tasks such as accounting, marketing or personnel management. MBA is not only the name of the course itself, but also of the degree that you receive after passing all exams. You can complete the MBA at universities, distance learning institutes and business schools. It is aimed at experienced professionals and university graduates who are striving for professional advancement to a management position and who have usually previously acquired a bachelor's degree in another subject.

What course content can I expect?

The MBA course covers all essential management areas. So you deal intensively with accounting, marketing and finance. In addition, you will familiarize yourself with methodical skills and train your leadership behavior, entrepreneurial thinking and your ability to communicate clearly. The contents of your MBA program also result from your respective specializations and are therefore not uniform. However, the following basic contents are often part of the MBA courses:

How does the MBA course work?

The MBA course takes about 2 to 4 semesters, depending on the chosen study model. The first two semesters serve to teach you important basics in business administration and economics. As your MBA progresses, you will also have soft skills and knowledge of leadership. In elective courses, you set priorities, for example in the areas of marketing, personnel or financial management.

The MBA course is also particularly application-oriented. In integrated practical phases you can already put your newly acquired knowledge into practice. You can also look forward to excursions to renowned companies. In order to meet international requirements, a semester abroad rounds off your MBA degree. In the last semester you will complete a scientific paper, the master’s thesis, and present your results in a colloquium, depending on the study regulations.


When you have completed all the exams of your MBA degree, you can devote yourself to your scientific master's thesis. You will then usually present the content and results of your work in a colloquium. If you have passed these final exams, the provider of your MBA course will award you a certificate with the state and internationally recognized title of Master of Business Administration. However, not all business schools award recognized titles. So you should inform yourself in advance about the reputation of the respective provider.

What requirements do I have to meet for an MBA course?

The requirements for taking up an MBA degree are high. Since certain basic knowledge is required for this postgraduate course, a completed university degree is mandatory for you in most cases. You should currently work in management and have at least 1 year of professional experience. In addition, you have to prove a good command of English - mostly through certificates such as TOEIC and TOEFL.

In some cases, a basic economic understanding is one of the additional admission criteria. You will prove this knowledge through GMAT or, alternatively, through an aptitude test in the form of a personal interview. Passing the GMAT test is a general prerequisite for studying an MBA at a business school. In individual cases, you can take up an MBA course without a first undergraduate degree. To do this, you should carefully examine the access requirements of the respective providers.

Can I get an MBA abroad?

Since the MBA course originally comes from the USA, the course is very popular internationally. The world's leading provider is Harvard Business School. But you can also start your MBA at the renowned London Business School. In addition to a complete study trip abroad, there is also the option of completing a semester abroad.

What career prospects do I have after completing my MBA?
