How can one acquire a childlike mentality

Importance and basics of child language acquisition

This is how you support your child's language skills

Only in cooperation and mutual understanding does a child receive the suggestions and encouragement that it needs for its linguistic development:

  • Long before your child speaks their first word, they have the important experience of being able to make themselves understood in their daily dealings with each other.
  • By accompanying the game as well as everyday activities with language (“Now I'll do the dishes”), you will awaken your child's joy in speaking and their interest in language.
  • At the same time, it gradually learns to relate things and events in its environment, but also feelings and moods, to language.

When your child finally begins to speak, they will want to use and apply this skill:

  • It takes someone who understands and answers it.
  • It takes someone who can provide him with linguistic role models.
  • It takes someone to reinforce its growing linguistic abilities.

Children who are delayed in their development or have a disability sometimes do not speak at all when they are two years old. Here it is important to use other means of communication, for example via facial expressions, gestures, body contact. Get advice from your pediatrician. Depending on your needs, it may also make sense to call in other specialists for your support, for example a speech therapist, an early intervention center or a social pediatric center (SPZ).
