| 12 If a swarm of small black flies rise out of the pot while watering houseplants, fungus gnats have spread. The annoying insects are harmful to plants because their larvae feed on young roots. Very young plants can even die when they are eaten.

| 12 The larvae are often stuck in the soil of newly purchased plants. But the plague can also be brought into the house when repotting. Female sciarid gnats prefer to lay their eggs in soil with a high proportion of compost.

| 12 They also like it wet. Therefore you should absolutely avoid waterlogging. A layer of pebbles to cover the earth is helpful. This makes it more difficult for the flies to lay their eggs.

| 12 New soil can be sterilized so that the small larvae do not hatch in the first place. To do this, spread the earth on a baking sheet and heat it in the oven at 200 degrees for 20 minutes. The pests are guaranteed not to survive baking.

| 12 If the plants are already infected, there is a home remedy for fungus gnats: matches.

| 12 Simply stick the matches upside down in the ground. The sulfur components in the ignition head are dissolved by the irrigation water and distributed in the pot. This kills the larvae, but does not harm the plants. One or two matches are sufficient for a pot with a diameter of ten to twelve centimeters and should be replaced every two weeks.

| 12 The yellow trap, which is available in the garden center, in the household department of most supermarkets or drugstores, has also proven itself in the event of a blackbid plague. A pack with several yellow bars costs around three euros. Simply put a trap in each infected pot and wait.

| 12 After just a few hours, the first fungus gnats stick to the sign and can't get away from them. The trap must not be removed too early, however, as new larvae keep hatching. After at least two to three months, all fungus gnats and their offspring should be eradicated.

| 12 Incidentally, the traps come in different shapes and are completely harmless from a biological point of view.

| 12 An effective remedy against harmful insects are useful insects - in this case: nematodes of the species "Steinernema feltiae" (SF nematodes). The roundworms kill the fungus gnat larvae and are so tiny that they can hardly be seen with the naked eye. They do no harm to the plant.

| 12 The beneficial insects are probably the fastest and safest solution against fungus gnats. They are available on the Internet and cost around ten euros. There were ten million nematodes in our package. That's why we initially only took half. The remainder can be kept in the refrigerator for a second application for a good month.

| 12 The white powder with the microscopic worms is simply dissolved in lukewarm water. It is important to stir the nematode solution well - but not for too long, otherwise the roundworms will suffocate in the water. Simply add the whole thing to the irrigation water for the plants. The mosquito problem should be resolved after two to three weeks.
