One day we'll recycle entire planets
World Creation Day: The world is not enough
We take more from our planet than is actually there. And we take more and more, faster and faster. We use too many raw materials, pollute too much water, catch too much fish, eat too much meat, cut too much wood and produce far too much carbon dioxide. We are exhausting the earth's reserves. And that much too quickly! The day on which natural resources are used up for the whole year is World Exhaustion Day - or Earth Overshoot Day. This is earlier every year.
Alarming: In recent years, our earth's resources were regularly used up in August, four months before the end of the year. Worse still, World Creation Day is a little earlier every year - our debts to the earth grow. These debts are visible. They show up in climate change, extinction of species, water shortages and in the collapse of fish stocks. We cannot exploit our world indefinitely. We all bear the responsibility for this. In the West in particular, we consume far too much - but the consequences are primarily borne by poor countries.
The exact date of the World Exhaustion Day is calculated every year by the Global Footprint Network. The basis is the ecological footprint of us humans: How much space do we need to cover all our needs?
While the earth remains the same size, its population and needs are growing steadily. We live today as if we had the resources of several earths at our disposal. According to estimates by the United Nations, the world population will grow to seven billion people by 2050 and the average life expectancy will also increase. With our demand for energy, food and other consumer goods, we will need the resources of three earths before 2050.
We know what needs to be done: The share of renewable energies must be increased, the destruction of forests must be halted and the loss of species halted. It is up to us all not to exhaust our planet any further. There are a thousand possibilities. Reduce Your Ecological Footprint - And Reduce Your Debt To Earth - In Three Easy Steps! If we don't, who will?
One of the best ways to help the world is in your wallet. Purchase decisions are powerful: Companies are encouraged to make their production more sustainable and to offer more environmentally friendly products. From furniture to paper - look out for the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label. When you need a new washing machine, computer or refrigerator - choose the most energy efficient model! When shopping or in the restaurant, ask for regional, seasonal and organic products. Consume less meat and animal products - and with fish: only MSC-certified (Marine Stewardship Council), please.
The production of every good costs energy and creates greenhouse gases, just like transport, distribution and disposal. So think about whether you really need something and prefer durable goods. The second best solution for the environment: If possible, recycled products. And you don't have to buy everything you need: sharing can be a cheap and environmentally friendly alternative.
What can everyone do to protect the climate? The easiest way is to eat differently, according to studies by WWF. Above all, less meat. Raising livestock for meat requires huge areas and generates enormous greenhouse emissions. Not eating meat has a huge impact on your personal climate footprint. If every German did not eat meat for even one day, this would save nine million tons of CO2 annually - the equivalent of 75 billion kilometers driven by car.
How much meat and what meat eat how, has diverse and far-reaching consequences for ourselves and our environment. Continue reading ...
