Which iPhone should I buy in 2018

Buying advice: buy iPhone 11, Pro, XR or iPhone SE?

The iPhone SE is the newest device in Apple's line-up. The question remains which device is suitable for whom.

EnlargeThe new entry-level model SE doesn't make the selection any easier

The decision for a new iPhone has always been difficult: which model should it be? What screen size can I get along with best? How much storage space makes sense? And should I take an older model and save money, or should I go for the brand new flagships? With the new iPhone SE, there is now also a new entry-level model that looks new but almost old-fashioned at the same time.

In this article, we'll look at each of the iPhones currently available from Apple to help you make a purchase decision. The iPhone X and XS are no longer officially sold in the Apple store, but there are still stocks left at Media Markt, Saturn, Notebooksbilliger and Co. We discuss prices, specifications and functions so that you can make your decision well prepared.

Is Now a Good Time to Buy a New iPhone?

If you shy away from high costs: Yes! Apple's annual round of introductions is half a year over, the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max are now always available at discounts, and the new SE is also an affordable entry-level model. The new iPhone 12 will probably not appear until late autumn, but then you have to pay the full price.

What is the best display size?

There are five screen sizes of the iPhone: 4.7 inches; 5.5 inches; 5.8 inches; 6.1 inches and 6.5 inches. Which size you like best mainly has to do with your personal preference. However, the best technology can be found in the 5.5, 5.8 and 6.5-inch models. Plus, the bigger the screen, the better videos and games will look on it too. At the same time, however, it is also important that the device is easy to use. It also depends on the size of your hands, for example.

However, it is not always the case that you see more content on a larger screen: a 4.7-inch iPhone SE shows about the same amount of emails or website content as a 5.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro.

If you're really not sure which iPhone size will fit you best, we highly recommend visiting an Apple Store and trying out the different screen sizes on site. Alternatively, if that's not an option (maybe because the nearest store is too far away), try drawing the sizes on a piece of paper and judging it. The housing dimensions can be found under the respective iPhone data in this article. Or use your current smartphone as a reference to get a first impression.

How much storage space do I need?

Every iPhone is available in at least two capacity options, the new models in three. It's important to consider how much storage space you really need before you buy. Because an iPhone does not have a micro SD card slot with which you can add additional storage space at a later point in time. While 32GB might sound like a lot of storage at first, you might be surprised how quickly it runs out - especially if you have a lot of applications and games to download. In addition, the iOS operating system already consumes a few gigabytes of memory.
However, 64 GB should be sufficient for most users, 128 GB is even better. However, only the iPhone SE, iPhone 11 and iPhone XR offer this inexpensive "temporary storage facility". Take a look at your current smartphone and see how much storage space you have used. This is usually the best way to find out how much memory you can get with your iPhone.

Storage space can also be saved by using the iCloud, which in turn means that you can get by with less storage on the device. Each Apple ID comes with 5 gigabytes of iCloud storage, an upgrade to 50 gigabytes costs 99 cents a month. The iCloud storage can be upgraded to a maximum of 2 TB.

When the fundamental decisions have now been made, we get down to the nitty-gritty: Which iPhone should it be? In the following, we show you a detailed overview of all models that are still available.

camera

One of the most important selling points of current smartphones is the camera. Here, Apple has made a major upgrade this year. The new generation is the first to install an ultra-wide-angle lens in addition to the wide-angle lens. The iPhone 11 does not have a telephoto lens, which is only built into the Pro models. The Pro models thus offer the most possibilities for photography and are the best choice for buyers who value this area of application. If the ultra-wide-angle lens is not that important to you, but you still don't want to do without a telephoto lens, it is worth taking a look at the previous models. The iPhone XS and also the iPhone X combine a wide-angle lens with a telephoto lens and thus create a good all-round package. The XS and X are no longer sold by Apple, but are available from many third-party suppliers. The XS in particular is still quite expensive, and for a small surcharge you can also get the iPhone 11 Pro. The iPhone XR only has a built-in camera, but thanks to Apple's software, the images are very good. The iPhone SE is superior to the iPhone 8 and even the XR thanks to the new processor! It offers a portrait mode with six effects (the XR only three) and supports "Next-generation Smart HDR". The video recording function also benefits from the new image processor. It has the QuickTake Video option ahead of the XR. You have to do without Animoji and Memoji with the new SE.

power

None of the iPhone 11 models compromise on performance. The A13 Bionic Chip, Apple's most powerful smartphone processor, is installed in all three of the current iPhones. Everyday tasks, games, but also photo or video editing pose no problem at all. The iPhone XR and XS still have their predecessor, the A12 Bionic, built in.

iPhone SE

Available from April 24th, 2020

The iPhone SE is very similar to the iPhone 8, it has a glass design, wireless charging but the new A13 processor. It is available with either 64, 128 GB or 256 GB, whereby the smallest capacity costs € 479, the next larger € 529 and the top version with 256 GB costs € 649.

We recommend choosing the iPhone SE if you have an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. Even if you have an old iPhone 8, it could be a worthwhile upgrade for you. Our iPhone recommendation remains the more innovative iPhone 11.

In our opinion, the iPhone SE is particularly attractive for lovers of small smartphones, because it has a 4.7-inch screen and weighs only 148 grams, making it the smallest and lightest model and still good for a shirt pocket. A big advantage is the familiar operation via Touch ID. You don't have to get used to Face ID and a real home button still has many fans.
