How do Nepenthes shine

Carnivorous plants

Carnivores and the light

One might assume that meat-based meals replace photosynthesis. While photosynthesis enables the plant to form energy-rich sugars, the prey animals provide the nitrogen that other plants obtain from the soil. The light regulates the annual cycle between the growth phase and the rest period

Most carnivorous plants live in open habitats where pioneer plant life or where vegetation can only develop to a limited extent. Therefore, they have little competition for the light factor. They are exposed to the sun in their habitat

The genera Pinguicula and Nepenthesthat also need a lot of light, but prefer indirect light

Natural light

Whenever possible, the plants prefer natural light. It is the guarantee of healthy and robust plants. In addition, enough light contributes to the strong, bright colors of the leaves

In the field

Thrive in large pots or created swamp beds Dionaea, Drosera and Sarracenia especially good in direct sunlight. While Darlingtonia prefers a partially shaded location

Place the carnivores in different rooms of the house. It is essential to ensure that the temperatures and the windows are aligned. in the Winter is a south-south-westerly location is advantageous, while in the summer a place to the east or west is preferable.
The window glass can cause burns on the leaves in direct sunlight. It is therefore advisable to place the plants at a distance of approx. 20 cm from the window pane

Locations under small skylights are not recommended, as the light intensity is not sufficient there. A bathroom with a window works well for tropical Nepenthes as long as you can stand very close to the window pane

Artificial light sources

In addition, neon tubes can be used indoors in winter. So-called full spectrum neon tubes and daylight tubes must be used together. It is possible to use only artificial light. It is important that you keep the minimum distance between the plants and the lamp, which is specified in the package insert. The lamps give off a lot of heat. All art lamps age. So you have to renew them regularly. To increase the light intensity, you should line the lamp holder with aluminum foil, which reflects the light towards the plants

The most important thing about light
  • All carnivores are very demanding when it comes to light
  • Most need direct sunlight
  • Nepenthes and Pinguicula prefer indirect light
