The ice hockey puck is standard - but a real must

Without a puck there will be no match. This little piece of rubber does all the action, and although it comes in a variety of designs, the rules for the ice hockey puck are very strict. The official regulatory size of ice hockey pucks is 1 inch (25 mm) thick, 3 inches (76 mm) in diameter, and weighs between 5.5 and 6 ounces (156 and 170 g). If a puck is produced in other sizes, it makes no sense to play with it as you will be playing in matches with a different ice hockey puck.

What's in a hockey puck?

The material in a classic puck is vulcanized rubber. The rubber has undergone a chemical treatment that makes the rubber very resistant to all kinds of abuse and blows. Apart from vulcanized rubber there is nothing in the puck. Not a piece of steel or sand in the middle. This consistency of the material increases the durability and life of the puck.

Before a hockey game or training session, the puck is usually brought to freezing temperatures to reduce jumping during the game or training session.

What happened to the fire puck?

Some of you may remember the so-called fire puck that appeared in the early 1990s. The fire puck was made in a different material that was designed to improve the visibility of hockey pucks on television.

The life cycle turned out to be quite short for the fire puck as there was no significant improvement in the viewing experience. In addition, the structural change in the material made the puck more likely to ricochet off the ice, which made it more difficult for the goalkeeper to stop the puck. Because of this, we have significantly increased the number of goals during this period.
