Research profile Tafsir (Koranic exegesis)

The focus of this professorship is on the specialist discipline tafsīr (Exegesis of the Koran). It is about the analytical examination of:

  • the various branches of knowledge and the associated literature that arose in the course of the history of the reception of the Koran (ʿUlūm al-qurʾān)
  • the theoretical principles and methods of interpreting the Koran (uṣūl at-tafsīr)
  • the Koran commentaries, which have been produced in the course of history as the products of a historically complex culture of interpretation.

The chair also conducts research on a wide range of topics that are directly or indirectly related to religious writing. This includes the following research areas:

  • Linguistic structure and rhetoric of the Koran
  • Historical development of Koran exegesis and contemporary approaches
  • Contextuality, intertextuality and intratextuality of the Koran
  • Mystical Exegesis of the Koran (tafsīr išārī)

2017 is the monograph with the title Koranic studies and Koranic exegesis. An introduction been published. It includes representations of classical and contemporary Muslim theologians. It covers the topics of Koranic studies, genesis of the Koranic text, history of Koranic exegesis, reading and analysis of Tafsīr texts of various genres, etc.

The main areas of work and research are:

  • Classical and modern exegesis of the Koran (tafsīr)
  • Genesis, reception and hermeneutics of the Koran
  • Koran Studies (ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān) and methodology of the Koran interpretation (uṣūl at-tafsīr)
