How can you tell when someone is lying
3 tricks to spot lies: Nobody is fooling you like this anymore
The fraud expert Pamela Meyer ("How to recognize every lie", mvg Verlag) has developed a good and simple method for recognizing lies. Her tricks will help you distinguish the truth from the untrue:
Trick 1 to spot lies: watch the face!
# 1 Look out for emotionsthat only flash for a fraction of a second (so-called "microexpressions"). These mini-impulses reveal the feelings that a person wants to suppress (e.g. anger, fear).
# 2 Pay attention to the conscious expression: In contrast to micro-expression, there is the conscious facial expression that is supposed to cover up real feelings. Often it is a smile: Smiling is the simplest expression that we can consciously control. People who professionally uncover lies pay particular attention to this (false) smile.
#3 Pay attention to the facial muscles. There are only a few muscles that humans can control. The muscle around the eye that makes up crow's feet is difficult to control. This can be seen, for example, in the wrong smile: while the mouth area is smiling, the eyes remain unmoved.
#4 Don't be fooled: Good liars are very adept at looking the other person in the eye! The blink frequency is more reliable: When lying, many people blink more often than when telling the truth.
#5 Pay attention to the duration of the emotional facial expressions: Sincere feelings last longer than five, but rarely more than ten seconds. A smile that lasts too long is definitely wrong!

Trick 2 to spot lies: understand body language!
# 1 Beware of contradictions: If body language and verbal statement do not harmonize, something is fishy (e.g. shaking your head when you say positive)
# 2 watch out for sudden interruption of gestures! Those who intend to lie immediately, often pause in their movements so that non-verbal signals do not give them away.
# 3 Note the distance: If someone does not feel comfortable in your presence, they will unconsciously try to keep their distance (e.g. by leaning back, putting feet towards the door, crossed arms, hidden palms). These body reactions reveal every smile, no matter how authoritative.

Trick 3 to spot lies: Listen right!
#1 Very important: Always ask open-ended questionsto get the potential liar to talk. The more he says, the higher the chance he'll give himself away.
#2 Resist the urge to add information. Just listen to what is actually being said! When in doubt, ask!
#3 Notice the chronology of the storythey want to serve you: Liars tell an incident in chronological order. Someone telling the truth is more casual and thoughtless. Tip: Have the same story told to you several times and from different perspectives.
#4 Parroting is an indication of uncertainty: If someone repeats your question in detail before answering, he wants to buy time. The same applies to counter questions.
#5 Do they want to make you feel guilty? Watch out, someone here wants to distract! ("I bet my colleagues from sales won't be asked such questions!")
#6 Be careful with specially chosen expressionse and detailed formulations (wrong: "I would never bring such a thing over myself!", true: "I would never do something like that!")
# 7 Standing phrases of credibility ("I swear by everything that is sacred to me"; "Quite honestly") are an indication of a lie.
The most important rule comes at the end:Always listen to your intuition! A clue alone does not make a liar. It always depends on the combination of several characters.
