“EUROPE IN MEDIA AND CIVIC DISCOURSE”, research seminar at the University of Vienna / Institute for Communication, July 2021
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Bauer and Dr. Nana Walzer lead through this research seminar with the aim to
- foster a better understanding of the field of European communication and to
- work out difficulties in specific areas and different contexts such as economy, social affairs, work, security, politics or health.
The seminar targets topics like the understanding of European values, the foundations of European society and the different processes of Europeanization. It reflects the European media landscape and its diverse quality standards, the method settings for the analysis of media-mediated European communication, communication and media theories as well as forms of European education. It is held as block seminar (4 blocks between July 1-15, 2021) in hybrid form, so offline and online participation are possible. The seminar is open for students of the University of Vienna and the CEU - Central European University, as well as for other, expecially Hungarian and Polish universities. The course delivers academic qualification in the field of European communication: 3 ECTS for students of CEU and University of Vienna, foreign students receive a certificate for extracurricular qualification. “FEELING EUROPE - Next Generation”, podcast series from May 2021
The video podcast series brings 10 different pro-European, civil society and non-partisan organizations to the curtain. Not least in the context of the future conference, the opinions of Europeans on the further shaping of Europe are asked. However, many people have been actively involved for the well-being of Europe for years - some for decades. You volunteer to inform other people about Europe, to get them excited about the European idea and to engage in fruitful discourse about the present and future of Europe. Nana Walzer presents the history of these organizations, their basic ideas and the motivation of those actively involved in an interview. “EUROPATAG.ONLINE: The Europe Day Symposium 2021”, May 9th 2021, 2.30pm-7pm
Nana Walzer leads through a varied Europe Day under the motto “More Europe - Now!”: Prof. Paul Lendvai will hold the opening keynote on the subject of “Democracy, Media and Eastern Europe”. This is followed by a keynote lecture by the linguist Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ruth Wodak on “Europe in the (communication) crisis”. An in-depth interview with profile editor Otmar Lahodynsky, who has been President of the Association of European Journalists for many years, then sheds light on the situation in which journalism and journalists find themselves in Europe today. Between these anchor points of the program, several short articles present various European initiatives, for example on pioneering innovations, cross-border projects or civil society engagement. The interpretation of the European anthem by Alex Petrak’s One Man Band concludes this first part of the symposium. Then it continues on twitch (Twitch.tv/Wildmics) with a long-distance special broadcast on the future of Europe: Political science professor and science fiction author Dr. Dirk van den Boom, the science duo Hoaxilla, science journalist Dr. Florian Aigner and Nana Walzer try out ways into a liveable future in Europe. Tommy Krappweis moderates the discussion in the usual relaxed manner, the right mix of entertaining and informative is guaranteed in any case.

Every year Europe: United Organization for a Human Europe (www.europeunited.eu) honors extraordinary civil society pro-European commitment with the “European of the Year” award. This year, a scientific jury selected from the many nominations: Univ. Prof. Dr. Thomas Bauer (Communication Science), Prof. Dr. Dirk van den Boom (political science) and Dr. Florian Aigner (physics). The award ceremony will be carried out by Thomas Bauer on behalf of the jury and Nana Walzer as Chair of Europe: United. It will take place online on Human Rights Day, December 10th. This is followed by a discussion on human rights in Europe 2020, in particular on Article 19 of human rights (the right to freedom of expression).

“THE EDUCATION OF HUMANITY. Steps to the Society of Tomorrow ”: Book presentation and panel discussion, March 19, 2019 in the Haus der Musik
Together with 20 experts, Nana Walzer (ed.) Published two volumes in March 2019 under the title “The education of humanity for adults” and “The education of humanity for young people”. Both volumes are dedicated to the practical implementation of the contents of the book “The evolution of humanity. Paths to tomorrow's society ”(Gowin / Walzer (ed.), Braumüller 2017). They offer tried and tested and new concepts, exercises and methods for working on yourself and with others at all ages: from childhood and youth to volunteering, humanitarian aid and adult education - for example in the form of parenting, intercultural cooperation and working life. from dealing with old age (es) to accompanying and experiencing at the end of life.
The book presentation offered an introduction by editor NW, followed by 3 keynote speeches by the authors of the book and a top-class panel discussion entitled “Europe of Humanity” with Ulrike LUNACEK (former Vice President of the European Parliament), Dr. Wolfgang BÖHM (Die Presse / Europe), Univ-Prof. Dr. Brigitte SINDELAR (Sigmund Freud Private University) and Univ.Prof. Dr. Thomas BAUER (University of Vienna).

In 2018, author and communication trainer Nana Walzer gave tips on burning questions about living together in her column “Relative to one another”.
