Becomes a business analyst automated

What role does a business analyst play in RPA projects?

Multi-talent with a wide range of skills

The RPA-BA should have an adequate understanding of each business requirement. This is to ensure that the technical solution fully meets the needs of the specialist department. The general skills required for the RPA-BA include business and industry knowledge, curiosity, patience, vision and of course analytical skills.

Since exception handling and attention to detail are of the utmost importance in an RPA project, strong analytical, communicative and problem-solving skills are expected from an RPA-BA in order to advance the project activities in the interests of the specialist departments. Requirements must be clearly and concisely documented in a language that can be understood by both company management and the technical teams. The dynamic and agile environment that RPA creates requires a person who is patient and at the same time determined to deal with challenges and problems in an intelligent and efficient manner.

Communication skills are critical to the many types of meetings a BA schedules and conducts. Well-organized meetings are result-oriented. Experiences have to be recorded and processed, tasks assigned and the respective project status communicated clearly and understandably for each project member. BAs are also problem solvers. They identify problems early on and solve them using the expertise of experts who know the process inside out. In this way, solving the problem becomes more like building a bridge. Because bridges are often required between the ideas of the specialist departments or the processes that are stored in silos.

A BA must also be a master of the interview. Because he has to extract knowledge from the minds of the employees. And only when he has really grasped all the details can he distill this information down to its lowest common denominator in order to support complex automation. This may require several iterative interviews. This requires a real interest and the ability to make an authentic connection.

During the development phase, the BA works with the development team to ensure that the RPA solution is developed as expected. Technical challenges and dependencies must be communicated to the project team in good time so that alternatives can be considered and suitable corrective measures can be taken in good time to keep the project schedule in the green area.

A pronounced technical acumen, knowledge of the latest technological advances and trends, accompanied by cross-departmental knowledge of industry expertise make a BA an ideal candidate for connecting all project participants. In addition to critical-analytical thinking and great curiosity, logical thinking should also be part of the characteristics of an RPA-BA in order to find the hidden automation possibilities of business processes. Distinct leadership skills are essential in order to lead the entire project team to a successful project conclusion despite adversities and sometimes diverging views.
