What are good natural alternatives to tampons

7 alternatives to tampons & pads

Almost half of the population have their days once a month. Such a large target group has to be supplied with all kinds of products. Since knowledge about menstrual products is mostly passed on by word of mouth, it does not have to be that you know all the options at all. Sanitary towels and tampons are all well and good, but there is so much more to it. We have summarized 7 alternative period products - with pros and cons!

1. menstrual cup

The menstrual cup (known as the Diva Cup or Moon Cup) was around as early as the 1930s. At that time, however, production was soon stopped because the materials were not available. The small cup is now made of silicone and is inserted in a folded state. Everything you want to know about menstrual cups can be found in this article!

Advantage: No replacement bandages or tampons required / Lots of freedom of movement even during sports / Very long-lasting if properly stored and cared for / No chemical additives / Not noticeable when used correctly / Different capacities and sizes available / Overall very environmentally friendly

Disadvantage: Insertion has to be practiced / Emptying them in public toilets can be a problem / Unfortunately it is possible to expire / Not always pleasant, despite correct introduction

2. Soft tampon

The synthetically manufactured sponges are a bit associated with the red light environment, namely they are associated with the possibility of having sex without the partner noticing the period blood. This works because the sponge can be pushed very close to the uterus.

Advantage: Great for swimming, sex and sports / no cord to pull out necessary - has a small tab / Very soft, so you don't feel it so strongly / No chemical additives

Disadvantage: Quite expensive for a few pieces / More likely to be found on the Internet or in pharmacies / Can be used once / No longer term replacement for every day of your period / Risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS = a type of blood poisoning that can occur if a tampon is soaked in for too long)

3. Period pants

Underpants with built-in pads are only available from very few providers. We have tested the period panties from SheThinx: You can find all the details about the panties in this article!

Advantage: Nice & comfortable underpants / All you need at night is a pair of underpants - no other products / Sustainable product / Different styles and capacities available / Very long-lasting if properly stored and cared for

Disadvantage: You have to wash them out immediately after use / You have to have a change of underpants with you when you are on the road for a long time / Unfortunately, it is possible to sail out on heavy days / Can (currently) only be ordered on the Internet

4. Cloth bandages

Cloth sanitary towels are self-sewn sanitary towels made from a cotton material with an absorbent core. You can actually design them yourself, or buy them in small DIY shops on Etsy and Co.

Advantage: Very long-lasting if properly stored and cared for / Sustainable product / All possible colors, shapes and sizes available / DIY product: you can design it according to your own needs /

Disadvantage: Close contact with your own blood, as it has to be washed out every time / You have to find the right shape for yourself first / Available in small, private internet shops - can't even be bought quickly in the drugstore

5. Menstrual sponge

This sponge is organic, i.e. it comes from the sea and was once a living being. It is disinfected and cut to the desired shape (similar to a tampon). Like the artificial sponges, the natural sponge can also be pushed very close to the uterus.

Advantage: Sustainable product / Comfortable to insert and remove even on light days / Not felt when handled correctly / Completely made of natural material / Reusable / Can also be worn during sex and swimming

Disadvantage: Close contact with your own blood as it has to be washed out every time / Risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS = a type of blood poisoning that can occur if a tampon is soaked in for too long) /

6. Sustainable tampons & pads

Sanitary towels and tampons are often mixed with chemical substances that can not only cause physical reactions, but also harm the environment. Fairly produced, biodegradable sanitary towels without synthetic dyes and fragrances are sustainable.

Advantage: Biodegradable / No fragrances and dyes / Sustainable product

Disadvantage: More expensive than conventional period products / More likely to buy on the Internet - cannot be bought quickly in every drugstore

7. Free bleeding

With this method, the woman feels when the next chunk of menstrual blood makes its way to the exit and then goes to the toilet in time to have a so-called release. Period products do not have to be used during two releases, although you can of course still use some. You can find all information about free menstruation in this article.

Advantage: In theory, you don't even need to buy a product! / Sustainable / Natural method / You get to know your own body better

Disadvantage: A challenge - you have to get to know and feel your own body first / Not suitable for all women - not all of them feel ovulation or the movement of their uterus / Each period can be different / There is always the possibility that blood will simply leak
