Historical awareness and psychoanalysis

Introduction

Nowadays nobody will deny in principle that our historical consciousness has reasons that are rooted in the non-conscious. The question that has only been discussed hesitantly so far, however, is whether and how one can bring this unconscious into the light of day.

The book deals with the psychoanalysis of historical consciousness, but also with the historical consciousness of psychoanalysis. It deals with fears and traumatizations that - clinically verifiable - exert their effects in historical-political consciousness. But it also addresses the unconscious driving forces that protect us from the overwhelming power of the historically destructive “too much” and open up opportunities for self-determination.

Special attention is paid to a “crack” in the consciousness of history caused by the Holocaust, which was almost unbearable and was therefore hastily covered and suppressed. This is presented and interpreted in detail in a case study by the German historian Hermann Heimpel. The fact that the author, born in 1939, was involved in his life history is methodologically considered as the risk of a "transference" that has not been seen through.

An appendix with 16 small texts and 13 illustrations complement the psychohistorical-historical-analytical research and reflections.
