BMI calculator

The free BMI calculator for evaluating and interpreting your body mass index. Easy as pie!

This is not new: German men are too fat. Being overweight affects your health. But what weight is normal and when does one speak of obesity or obesity? We have established the Body Mass Index, abbreviated as BMI, for evaluating body weight. With the help of our BMI calculator you can easily determine your BMI yourself. You can find everything you need to know here.

Age-dependent assessment of weight for men

A weight classification using BMI according to WHO is independent of age and gender for research purposes. However, in order to take into account the influence of these factors on weight, the differentiated classifications of the German Nutrition Society (gender-dependent) and the American National Research Center (age-dependent) are used in the calculator.

Why can't weight be judged by kilograms?

The unit of measurement for specifying body mass is of course kilograms and grams - but that is not enough to evaluate a person's measurements. If a man weighs 80 kilograms, he can look slim - if the weight is distributed over a length of 2.00 meters, for example. If he were only 1.60 meters tall, you might see a clear abdominal attachment and recommend that you reduce your weight. Determining the BMI alone is also not sufficient for the assessment. The calculated value must be classified - what counts for normal weight, when is a person overweight and when should one speak of obesity? The BMI and its classification take into account the individual requirements of the person, various points are included here:

  • the body weight
  • the size
  • age
  • the gender

How is the BMI calculated?

To calculate the body mass index, please determine these values in advance:

  • Your current body mass m (i.e. your weight) in kilograms
  • the height l in meters

The BMI is the quotient of the body mass and the body length squared. Please put your details in this formula:

BMI = body mass m / (body size l) ²

The calculation is even easier with our BMI calculator!

How do you calculate the BMI Body Mass Index?

In addition to your body mass and length, we also need your age and gender for the calculation. The calculator can do more, we have already stored the classification of the BMI values. The basis for this is the publications of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) for assessing the BMI for both sexes and those of the American National Research Center for considering age. Our graphic now compares your result with the recommended normal weight. In addition, the virtual scale shows where your weight can be found in the classification. At a glance you can see how many kilograms you would have to lose to get into a better group.

How are the BMI data for men evaluated?

The determined BMI values divide people into different groups:

  • Underweight people
  • Normal weight people
  • Overweight people

Since there are no upper limits and the physical impairments as well as the health risks increase with increasing BMI, obesity is further classified into:

  • Obesity
  • Very overweight - obesity I
  • Obesity (obesity) II
  • Obesity III

What should the BMI be in men?

According to the German Nutrition Society, these guide values apply to the male sex:

Underweight< 20
Normal weight20-24,9
Very overweight30-34,9
Obesity grade II35-39,9
Obesity grade III≥ 40
An ideal BMI according to the American National Research Center for men is:

  • 19-24 at the age of 19-24
  • 20-25 at the age of 25-34 years
  • 21-26 aged 35-44 years
  • 22-27 aged 45-54 years
  • 23-28 aged 55-65 years
  • 24-29 aged over 65 years

What does an example calculation look like?

A 24-year-old man notes these dates:

  • Body mass 85 kg
  • Body length 1.80 m

Using the above formula, he calculates:

  • BMI = body mass m / (body size l) ²
  • BMI = 85 kg / 1.80²
  • = 26.23 kg / m²

This BMI value would be too high for his age, ideally it should not exceed 24 kg / m². For such a value he would have to reduce his weight by about 10 kilograms. According to the DGE, he is classified as overweight.

Is the calculator also suitable for children?

This calculator is designed for male adults and is not suitable for children or adolescents under the age of 18. Use our BMI calculator for children and adolescents.

I'm losing weight - do I have to recalculate the BMI?

The current body mass is part of the BMI formula - if you lose weight, the BWI must be recalculated.

When does the informative value of the BMI reach its limits?

Our weight is not only dependent on our height, the stature and the proportion of muscles also play an important role. Muscles weigh more than fat tissue - this is why the BMI reaches its limits even in people with many muscles.

For a strength athlete who takes part in bodybuilding competitions, the following BMI is calculated:

  • Body mass 100 kg
  • Body length 1.80 m
  • Age 30 years
  • Gender Male

This results in the following BMI calculation:

  • BMI = 100 kg / 1.80²
  • = 30.86 kg / m²

Far from the ideal value of his age (20-25 kg / m²), he would be very overweight even after the DGE. However, no one would seriously recommend reducing weight for health reasons.
