Planning a move with children

It is best to include your children in the move planning. Talk to them early on about the upcoming move and, above all, the reasons for it. If you move two streets further into your newly built home, this is certainly not an issue - but a move of a few kilometers means a serious turning point in the lives of the children.

tip: When planning your move, allow yourself some time to inspect your new home with your children, to see the way to school or to kindergarten and maybe even to get to know special attractions or other children. This makes it easier for the little ones to move into the new four walls.

Plan to move with your pets

Dogs attach themselves to their masters - for them moving is associated with stress, but they will quickly overcome it and explore the new home as an exciting area. Moving with cats is different: for the house cats, the stress starts with packing the boxes and doesn't end after the move. Because cats are stationary animals. In the course of planning your move, you should definitely remember to get homeopathic globules or SOS drops. This allows you to calm the animals down in advance and on the day of the move. The Feliway room spray, which is odorless for people, is helpful for getting used to the new environment.

tip: It is best for pets if they can spend the day of the move with people they trust, away from the hustle and bustle of the move. When the animals follow suit and the familiar furniture and thus the familiar smells are already there, it is easier to get used to it. Cats should not be allowed outside for at least six to eight weeks after moving, or they can run back into their old homes.

Planning a move: what to do and when?

1. Three months before moving out

As soon as you have signed your new rental agreement, the first thing to do is to cancel the existing rental agreement. As a rule, tenants have a notice period of three months under tenancy law. If you want to move out earlier, you have to rely on the goodwill of your landlord. In the best case, a new tenant can be found quickly, so that you do not have to pay double rent and the move to the new property can take place quickly. Exceptions can be made if one has to move to another city for professional reasons, wants to get married or is admitted to a retirement or nursing home. As soon as the day of the move has been determined, you should apply for leave or special leave (one to two days are usual).

Discuss with your new landlord what renovation work will be necessary in the new apartment so that you can start on time. The possible takeover of furniture can also be planned in advance. You can clarify with your old landlord which cosmetic repairs may still have to be made, whether you have to paint colored walls when moving out or whether the fixtures you have made will be taken over by the tenant or new tenant.

2. Two months before the move

Authorities, banks, insurance companies, radio license fees (formerly GEZ), employers, schools and kindergartens are happy if they are not informed at the last minute. When moving money, for example, there is a free service from the savings banks that relieves you of notifying business partners and converting standing orders. You can submit a request for forwarding to the post office. For a service fee, you can get your mail forwarded for six or twelve months. Unfortunately, this does not apply to newspapers and magazines that are mailed to the company. So inform the publisher about the change of address for all subscriptions. You have to pay an additional fee for parcels and parcels. The order for a forwarding can also be placed on the Swiss Post website.

Clear out the basement, attic, garage and storage room as early as possible. All furniture and objects that you have not used in the last year or two can usually be thrown away in the bulky waste. Broken items, such as electronic waste, should be disposed of properly. See the move as an opportunity to create more air and space for your new apartment and possibly try out a bit of minimalism.

Depending on the municipality, you can organize a bulky waste collection. Find out more about this at the responsible office. And while you are already on site: You can apply for a special parking permit or a parking ban for the day of the move at the road construction office. This will give you the signs you need early on to keep the parking space in front of the house free on the day of the move. Important for planning: The no-parking signs must be picked up, transported, set up four days before the move and brought back again. However, there are a number of service providers who can do this for you. Depending on the space required and the duration, the service costs around 80 to 120 euros. When moving with the freight forwarder, the moving company takes care of the no-stopping policy. Caution: Unauthorized barriers and parking space reservations are punishable by law.

3. Four weeks before the move

Now you pack the first boxes with little used items, such as books, bed linen, decorations. With everything, think about whether you really need it after the move. Tip: Things that you would like to sort out can either be given away, sold or donated to social institutions. You can find addresses on the homepage of your city.

Then it is important to inform the water, gas and electricity providers as well as telephone, cable and DSL providers about your planned move so that there are no additional costs and delays. If the cable connection is not included in the rent of the old apartment and you are moving to a federal state in which another operator provides the connection, the old contract must be terminated (usually one month's notice). If you move to an area that the existing provider has already developed, you only have to inform them of your new address. As a rule, the contract continues at the new address.

When planning, do not forget to let the neighbors and the caretaker know so that driveways can be opened in good time and no one is surprised by the hustle and bustle of moving or by many moving helpers. You can take this opportunity to say goodbye in peace, because experience shows that there is no more time for this on the day of the move.

4. One week before the move

Organize sufficient packing material in good time. You can buy used or new cardboard boxes from hauliers or hardware stores. Remember that a packed box should only weigh a maximum of 15 to 20 kilograms and do not measure the number of boxes too short. Hand trucks and lashing straps are valuable tools. The freight forwarder also lends these.

Think of sturdy adhesive tape, transparent bags for small parts, bubble wrap, tissue paper, cover film for sensitive furniture and floors, and a sufficient number of waterproof pens. Briefly note the contents of each box (for you) and the room in which the box is to be cleared (for the helpers). The room code should always be noted at the top and on one side.

If possible, you can attach a floor plan to each door of the new apartment in advance, which shows what belongs in this room and how the furniture should be. On this plan, clearly write the abbreviation (WZ = living room, KÜ = kitchen and so on) that can be found on the boxes (and furniture) in this way and not otherwise.

Packing cardboard boxes correctly for the move: the best tips

  1. Check each box for stability before packing it up. Mix books with clothes or plush toys to make boxes of even weight. Dishes and bed or table linen are also a good combination. Remember: heavy things down, light things up and wrap each piece of crockery individually in paper. As a test, gently shake each packed box. What is not fixed now can be broken when moving!
  2. Accessories such as screws and hooks are packed in transparent bags and attached to the piece of furniture to which they belong with adhesive tape. Small parts such as salt shakers should be packed well, for example in larger storage containers, so that they do not sink into the mountain of paper when unpacking and are accidentally thrown away.
  3. Indoor plants are best wrapped in damp newspaper, put in a plastic bag that is held in place with adhesive tape, and then transported in groups of several in a sturdy box. If there is frost outside, stop watering the plants a day or two beforehand.
  4. Valuables, documents and the like can be packed in a bag beforehand and deposited with someone you trust until after the move. That saves a lot of trouble.
  5. Always have enough rubbish bags ready when packing and only pack what you really want to keep. Don't forget: throwing it away, selling it or donating it saves transport costs.
  6. First put what you need last and vice versa. Each household member should pack a suitcase for two to three days that contains clothes, toiletries, medication, and other essentials.

5. Two days before the move

Think of good food for your moving helpers. Get a few boxes of water and organize sandwiches and snacks for the day of the move. A home-made goulash soup from parents or friends is always popular.

Use the products in the refrigerator and freezer as much as possible. The rest is stowed in a freezer bag on the day of the move so that you can defrost the freezer and clean the refrigerator. Because of the coolant, never transport the refrigerator horizontally, but always upright. In addition, the fridge and freezer should rest for about twelve hours after moving before they are reconnected to the power.

Tip: Don't forget the universal box for the day of the move

This box includes: extension cords, garbage bags, crepe, insulating and scotch tape, rags and towels,
Household roll, universal cleaner in a spray bottle (that saves the bucket), pen and paper, scissors,
Screwdriver (possibly cordless screwdriver), hammer, cutter, plaster and headache tablets. To mark
Mark the universal box with a signal color and make sure that it is not packed prematurely.

6. On the day of the move

Cover sensitive floors with tarpaulin. If you move into a newly built house and the outdoor area is not yet ready, remember to cover the path to the house with painter's fleece or green felt so that the moving helpers don't bring all the stones and construction site dirt into the house. Pack important papers, keys, cell phone and battery as well as tools, first aid kit and cleaning supplies separately. It is best to transport them personally in the car. So that the porters do not run around aimlessly, one person should take over the instruction during loading and unloading.

7. Do it after moving

Hand over the apartment with your ex-landlord. Note and photograph the meter readings and have the handover of the keys confirmed in writing by the landlord.

As a car owner, you must inform the Road Traffic Office of your new address immediately after moving. Attention: Delays in the registration of a vehicle will be punished with a fine. You have to register at the citizens' office up to a maximum of two weeks after moving in. Tenants need the so-called landlord's certificate to present it to the residents' registration office.

Planning a move: With a forwarding agent or on your own?

The most convenient and safest method is to hire a moving service. In any case, let us make you a detailed and binding cost estimate for all services. Basic insurance is included, which can be increased individually. Agree on the method of payment in advance.

Serious moving companies personally get a picture of their customers' household status on site. This service is usually non-binding and free of charge. If desired, the furniture can be adapted to the new home, walls can be painted and electrical appliances can be connected.

Advantage: In the event of damage, the contents are insured by the shipping company. The statutory basic liability is 620 euros per cubic meter of removal goods. In the event of damage, however, the client has the burden of proof.

Disadvantage: the whole thing is not cheap. Because a full-service move is about twice as expensive as a partial move with the shipping company.

If you move on your own, unfortunately nothing is insured; The relocation helpers' liability insurance does not cover “friendship or goodwill” services either. Unless an uninvolved third party such as the landlord was harmed if, for example, a window was broken while moving.

Deduct the move for tax purposes

Relocation for professional reasons

Anyone who moves for professional reasons can claim the relocation costs as income-related expenses for tax purposes. The tax office recognizes the move as a job if the daily drive to work is shortened by an hour. The deductible costs include:

  • Transportation costs
  • Traveling expenses
  • possibly accommodation costs
  • Brokerage fees
  • Costs for additional lessons for the children that have become necessary due to the move
  • possibly the acquisition costs for a new stove and / or new ovens
  • Repairs or changes to the television antenna
  • Installation of a water softener for the dishwasher
  • Babysitter on moving day
  • Tips
  • Cosmetic repairs in the old apartment (if you are obliged to do so by the rental agreement)
  • Task and connection of the telephone

If you already live in the new apartment but still pay rent for the old apartment, you can claim six months 'rent for the old apartment, or three months' rent for the new apartment in the opposite case.

Good to know: Without proof of individual costs, lump sums can be given in the context of a job-related move: Almost 800 euros for singles, around 1,500 euros for married people and around 350 euros for each additional family member who moves. Proof of higher costs must be provided by supporting documents.

Private move

Even if you move privately with a moving company, you can deduct 20 percent of the costs: the tax authorities consider packing their belongings and transport to be a household-related service. For this, he grants a tax discount of up to 6,000 euros per year. The dismantling and reassembly of furniture is one of the craftsman's services that are also favored and that you can sell. The following applies here: 20 percent of the labor costs are deductible, up to a maximum of 1,200 euros. However, cash payments endanger the bonus. Clarify in advance that you can pay the invoice by bank transfer, crossed check or EC card.
