Why is Xiaomi fighting in India now

Samsung and Xiaomi each ship 10 million smartphones in India

The two heavyweights in the smartphone market Samsung and Xiaomi have been fighting head to head for the crown in market share and sales in India for some time. After a dry spell, Xiaomi managed to overtake its competitor Samsung in India in terms of sales figures for smartphones last year. Apparently, Samsung managed to catch up with Xiaomi again in the second quarter of 2018. According to the latest figures from the market researchers at Canalys, Xiaomi and Samsung are currently only a blink of an eye apart.

Samsung and Xiaomi currently hold a combined smartphone market share of 60 percent in India. Last year this was only 43 percent. According to Canalys' estimated sales figures, Xiaomi has more than doubled the delivery volume for its smartphones in the Indian market. Samsung achieved its best growth since the fourth quarter of 2015 with an increase of 47 percent.

"Samsung strikes back" is also the core message of the current market analysis for the Indian smartphone market by Canalys. At Samsung, 2.3 million devices sold in India, especially the Galaxy J2 Pro without internet, and at Xiaomi, the top seller with 3.3 million smartphones sold was the Redmi 5A. The renovation program by Vivo and Oppo is also apparently having an impact. Vivo saw 32 percent growth and Oppo 5 percent.
