How can BRTS be successful in Amritsar

Amritsar

Amritsar is a prosperous metropolis in the Indian Punjab. It is the destination of many pilgrims and tourists from India and around the world.

Background [edit]

Amritsar is shaped by the Sikhs, who make up half of the population and for whom the city with the Golden Temple is the spiritual and cultural center. Amritsar is located in northern Punjab, just 28 km from the Pakistani border crossing at Wagah. From Delhi it is approximately 450 km to the northwest on the Grand Trunk Road.

Three historical events of national importance are still very much in the minds of the Amritsaris: the massacre in 1919, the partition of the Punjab in 1947 and the storming of the Golden Temple in 1984.

Climate [edit]

The best time to travel is from November to March. In the Indian "winter" the temperatures are very pleasant and the number of rainy days is minimal.

Gurdwaras, temple

    • (अमृत सरोवर,). This pond artificially created in the 16th century (literal translation: Nectar lake) around the Golden Temple gave the city of Amritsar its name. Healing powers are attributed to the water. At two corners of the circular path around the pond there is a free water tap where you can drink a cup and / or fill this water into containers you have brought with you for those who stayed at home. Empty plastic bottles are sold by hawkers in town. Some Sikhs take a ritual bath on the steps of the pond or - hidden from the view of tourists - in separate bathhouses for men and women built into the pond. Visitors circle the pond clockwise.
