The good manners - an Audible original radio play in Berlin in the 1920s

Roaring twenties

Pleasure, suffering and love alongside emancipation and self-determination: "Die juten Sitten" is a brilliant Audible original radio play that is about smart, strong women in the demi-world of the golden 20s in Berlin.

The story - personal fates in the demi-world of the 20s

Former Hollywood diva Hedi (Hedwig) is sitting in a California prison in the 1950s, awaiting execution. She decides to tell the journalist Noah the story of her childhood in Berlin in the 1920s, which apparently set the course for her future life. Noah hopes to learn the real reasons for Hedi's murder. But he is quickly drawn into a completely different time: into a wicked demi-world that is determined by lust, suffering, violence, guilt and desolation and by women who meet this desolation with wit and chutzpah.

She grew up in the Berlin brothel "Ritze" on Mulackstrasse, as Hedi recounts in retrospect of the fate and everyday life of the brothel residents in a society between glamor and disillusionment and their very personal pursuit of independence. The diva of the 1950s tells from the point of view of her eight-year-old self, which is shaped by the experienced brothel owner Minna, the determined prostitute Colette and the action, failure and recovery of the tough Dominatrix Natalia.

Away from glamor and fame - the background to "Die juten Sitten"

In the eventful, politically and socially troubled time at the end of the Weimar Republic, the women's movement also experienced a climax. With the economic boom, women found their way into the world of work. In addition, the hard-won right to vote offered them social participation for the first time.

In the golden 20s, the new self-image was not only reflected in the more revealing women's fashion of the time, but was also reflected in a changed lifestyle that was independent of men. The emancipated woman wanted to earn her own living, Determine your own life and live your lust uninhibited. For many of them, however, independence was also an uphill struggle, as only a few had the necessary financial resources. The dream of a self-determined life in the 20s led some to the sinful Berlin nightlife and the unadorned demi-world of the brothels, where they sold their bodies for money and lived a life between drugs, sex and alcohol.

"Die Juten Sitten" takes you into this demi-world, in which despite the desolate atmosphere courageous women stand up for themselves and strengthen themselves in the community - each in their own unique way. In the radio play you experience the prostitute Colette as an emancipated businesswoman who advocates the social recognition of her work. Less politically, but no less proudly, the brothel owner and Hedi's grandma Minna is her wife at all costs, while Natalia uses her work as a dominatrix like a fortress against society.

From the shrewd businesswoman to the arrogant gigolo

In a world in which shining heroes are rare, "Die Juten Sitten" presents you with authentic characters who face a difficult everyday life with a good dose of wit and a sense of reality. Despite their differences, the characters have one thing in common: their desire and pursuit of a better world.

Background: Anna Basener, the author of "Die juten Sitten"

Author Anna Basener is very familiar with entertaining stories. The native of Essen, who was born in 1983, devoted herself to writing booklets during her studies and thus financed her living. As the most successful German dime novelist, she wrote amusing stories about great feelings, fates and decisions in the glamorous world of the nobility.

That Anna Basener also has a lot to offer as a novelist, she was able to prove with her debut novel “When the grandma cooked pigeon soup for the whores”, for which she 2018 received the Putlitzer Prize. The novel celebrates its theater premiere in 2019 at the Schauspiel Dortmund. Cult director Adolf Winkelmann secured the film rights even before the release. The versatile writer, who has meanwhile published her second novel “Trash and Atonement”, is also one sought-after author for scripts, plays and radio plays and has made a name for herself as a nobility expert and presenter.

In the radio play of "Die Juten Sitten" you experience it Skilfully accurate, slippery and at the same time funny narrative style by Anna Basener up close. With strong sayings and relentlessly direct language, the protagonists lead you in their world between misery, pride and independence a. In this way, the radio play author manages to almost completely remove the distance between the fictional half-world and your listener's reality.
