mineralogy

This introduction to the special mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry and geology of deposits concentrates on the essential contents of the subject, which are dealt with in detail and made understandable through numerous illustrations. Basic knowledge of physics, chemistry and general geology is required. Numerous references to the technical importance of minerals, rocks and ores enrich the textbook. The work reflects the authors' many years of experience. It is ideally tailored to teaching at universities and offers important learning aids in the geoscientific Diplom, BSc and MSc courses.

The content of the 8th edition has been thoroughly revised and brought up to date with modern scientific standards. The introductory chapter has been divided into the chapters crystals, minerals and rocks and expanded. Numerous new illustrations, including several in color, have been added and contribute to the understanding of the text. The proven layout and format was retained.

Martin Okrusch was born in Guben (Niederlausitz) in 1934 and studied geosciences at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Würzburg. After receiving his doctorate in 1961 and his habilitation in 1968, he first worked as a visiting researcher at the University of California at Berkeley. He was then a professor at the University of Cologne, before receiving a professorship for mineralogy at the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1972. From 1982 onwards, Martin Okrusch held the chair for mineralogy at the University of Würzburg. Even after his retirement in 2000, he continues his research on the petrology of metamorphic and igneous rocks.

Siegfried Matthes †, born in 1913 in Pausa (Vogtland), died in 1999 in Würzburg, held the chair for mineralogy at the University of Würzburg from 1955 to 1981. He is known for important work in the field of petrology of metamorphic rocks.
