* One credit point corresponds to a maximum of 30 hours of work for preparation and follow-up as well as for attending courses.

Special admission requirement: language skills

Proof of the required English skills (level B2) must be submitted in one of the following variants. Although proof is usually only required when you enroll, for your own safety you should have it when you apply:

  1. School certificates: if English as a continued foreign language has been taken in the last four semesters of the Abitur and has been completed with at least grade 4 (= 5 grade points) or

  2. UNIcert® II certificate: 3.0 or

  3. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Certificate (at least 5.0) or

  4. Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE): B-C or
  5. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL, www.ets.org/toefl/): Internet-based test with 87 points, paper-based test with 560 points.

Study stays abroad are strongly recommended; learning agreements can be concluded at the institute for this purpose before departure.

What distinguishes the study of English at the HU?

The course combines and integrates the disciplines of American studies and English literature and cultural studies as well as linguistics and is professionally oriented. The subject gives students an overview of the essential and current developments in the sub-sciences involved, taking into account the special scientific expertise and special areas of competence of the teaching staff. The students are reliably supervised by highly motivated lecturers from an institute which in its history can be traced back to the oldest English university teaching institution in Germany and which also played a pioneering role in American studies.

What special skills and interests should you bring with you?

  • At least good knowledge of English and German (oral and written)
  • An interest in language or texts and a certain basic ability to analyze them
  • A special interest in meeting other cultures / literatures and in intercultural exchange
  • Pleasure in extensive reading and dealing with linguistic and cultural forms, also in student projects
  • Decision-making aid: study-related counseling test at the employment agency's occupational psychological service
