Wouldn't you also like to earn 1,500 euros a day?

With a little work and the right platform, you can build an online shop that will make you so much money (and maybe even more).

Shilpi Yadav is an excellent example. She has given up her job to devote herself fully to her fashion label with clothing inspired by her Indian roots. Despite the risks associated with making such a decision, she now makes half a million euros a year (an average of 1,500 euros per day).

The shop was built with Shopify, without a doubt one of the best ecommerce platforms out there. But there are numerous other platforms with which you could build your own online shop. The choice always depends entirely on the needs of your company.

Choose a platform and nothing in the way of your success with an annual turnover of 500,000 euros.

I looked at and rated the best platforms for online shops. Now all you have to do is choose the right one for your current situation.

The 7 best ecommerce platforms

  1. Wix - The best choice for flexibility and personalization
  2. Squarespace - The best ecommerce platform for creative minds
  3. BigCommerce - The best platform for medium to large shops
  4. Shopify - The best all-in-one solution
  5. WooCommerce - The best platform for WordPress websites
  6. OpenCart - The best platform selling digital products
  7. Ecwid - The best solution for integrating with an existing platform

This is how you can find the best platform for your online shop

There are of course several factors to consider when choosing an ecommerce platform, including: Your experience with such platforms, to what extent the platform needs to be personalized and tailored to your brand and which products should be sold.

Now you are spoiled for choice because there are just too many options.

To make your choice easier, I've put together a list of the most important factors for e-commerce platforms.

It is best to first create a list of your needs and desired functions and then narrow down the selection using the following criteria.

Physical or digital products

Digital products are very popular. However, selling and delivering a digital product is very different from selling physical products.

Different e-commerce platforms handle such products differently and some do not support the sale of digital products at all. So before choosing a platform, you need to be clear about what type of product you want to sell.

Possible uses

If you already have a website, the new online shop must be integrated into the existing website. In this case you don't have to build a new website for the shop.

If you're using WordPress, you could install a plug-in unless you want to build a new site.

If you don't have a website yet, you need a website builder with online shop functionality. The choice of platform depends on your current needs.

Day-to-day business and expiration

Order management, product creation, order tracking and navigation of the platform are important factors in the day-to-day management of an e-commerce shop.

You have to find a platform that can handle day-to-day business without any problems. Adding a new product shouldn't be a headache. You have to be able to see new customer orders immediately and keep your website up to date.

The platform you choose must offer a certain degree of flexibility, be able to be personalized and still be easy to use. Don't forget: the higher the level of personalization, the more complicated it is to use. Why?

Because flexible platforms offer more settings and configuration options.

You have to find a platform that offers enough flexibility and is still easy to use in order to optimize your workload.

Design and flexibility

Some website builders (like Wix) have the convenient drag-and-drop functionality and thus offer a high level of flexibility. All you have to do is imagine your website and then build it. Due to its flexibility, however, such a platform is often difficult to operate.

Other e-commerce solutions can be integrated into your existing website and automatically take on the look and feel of the current page. Some users prefer this option, while others want more control.

If you haven't had any experience building a website and are happy with a simple design, ease of use is probably more important than flexibility in your case.

However, if you already run a shop or an established brand, the design is the most important thing because the new online shop must of course be recognizable.

Additional functions for e-commerce

Would you like to be able to offer discounts and accept online payments? You may want to email your customers a reminder when they unexpectedly abandoned their purchase.

Or you want to create customer profiles and need access to detailed analysis reports.

Here is a list of other helpful features for online shops:

  • Email Marketing
  • Memberships and Recurring Payments
  • Gift cards and coupons
  • Installment payments
  • Shipping and delivery management
  • Product variants
  • Product categories

Think about which of these functions you cannot do without and which would be a nice addition, and then make your selection accordingly.

The different types of E-commerce platforms

In this article, I recommend different types of e-commerce platforms. When choosing, you always have to consider the current situation and needs of your company.

Website builders with e-commerce functionality

There are many website builders out there that offer an online shop with extensive e-commerce functions.

This option is particularly suitable for companies that do not yet have a website (or want to build a new website). A website builder does not require any prior knowledge and is therefore ideal for beginners.

E-commerce integration for existing websites

If your company has an existing website, you need to find a solution that integrates easily. Many of the platforms on my list can be easily integrated into existing websites, so you don't have to build a new one.

However, these solutions require a certain basic knowledge of website programming and are therefore not suitable for beginners.

Plug-ins for WordPress

This option is the best solution for websites built with WordPress.

Note: If you don't know what a WordPress plug-in is, you should go for a website builder instead. 😉

# 1 - Wix - Review: The best choice for flexibility and personalization

Wix is an extremely flexible kit with fair pricing and is ideal for online shops. This solution is known for its drag-and-drop functionality and great design. With this platform you can freely design your online shop according to your wishes.

Wix has more than 500 design templates and flexible design options that do not require any prior knowledge. You can also design your online shop completely freely without a template.

Thanks to the robust mobile app, you can conveniently manage your online shop while on the go and make changes if necessary.

Wix has many marketing features, including: Email marketing, Facebook advertising, and the ability to program social media posts right from the dashboard. You can even sell your products on social networks.

The premium packages for e-commerce and business have the following functions:

  • Support in over 90 languages and local currencies
  • Over 250 apps and extra functions for your website
  • No transaction fees
  • Custom product pages
  • Worldwide delivery and tax options
  • Coupons and discounts
  • Filter options
  • Product collections
  • Custom checkout experience
  • Recurring payments

If your current website was built with Wix, you can easily switch to an ecommerce plan.

Wix offers three ecommerce plans:

  1. Business Basic - 17 euros per month
  2. Business Unlimited - 25 euros per month
  3. Business VIP - 35 euros per month

Wix is ideal for small online shops or companies that rely on a special design. However, for large orders or a larger product range, I would recommend BigCommerce or Shopify.

You can try Wix for free.

# 2 - Squarespace Rating: The Best Ecommerce Platform for Creatives

Squarespace is a popular website builder. The higher priced plans also offer online shopping functionality. The design templates can be easily adapted, which makes this construction kit the ideal choice for creative minds.

You can even upload your own template or customize a design template and easily switch between different designs to find the one that suits you.

In addition to the beautiful designs, Squarespace offers the following e-commerce features:

  • Subscriptions, digital products, and personal compatibility
  • Integrated tools for automatic tax calculations
  • Coupons and gift cards
  • Cart recovery
  • Mobile-optimized checkout process
  • Mobile management of the online shop
  • Product lists
  • Quick view
  • Inventory management
  • Real-time shipping estimates

Squarespace easily integrates with popular email marketing and social media platforms. This makes selling a breeze.

In addition, this provider offers round-the-clock customer service that is available to you at any time if you have any questions or problems.

Squarespace offers three ecommerce plans (and one non-ecommerce personal plan):

  1. Personal - 11 euros per month, without e-commerce functionality
  2. Business - 17 euros per month + 3% transaction fees
  3. E-Commerce (Basic) - 24 euros per month, excluding transaction fees
  4. E-Commerce (Advanced) - 36 euros per month, excluding transaction fees

The premium solution for companies, businesses and individuals offers tailor-made support thanks to a dedicated account manager, SEO advice and prioritized technical support.

Although the business plan has basic e-commerce functions, I would still recommend one of the e-commerce plans as there are no transaction fees in this case. It also gives you access to additional functions, such as custom customer accounts and powerful analysis reports.

You can try Squarespace right now for free.

# 3 - BigCommerce - Review: The best platform for medium to large shops

BigCommerce is an all-in-one e-commerce website builder designed specifically for large online stores. This solution has special functions for processing large order quantities and a particularly large selection of products.

The more than 100,000 customers also include well-known brands such as Ben & Jerry’s or SkullCandy.

Despite having a smaller customer base compared to other platforms, BigCommerce is always a good choice.

BigCommerce has tons of great features, including:

  • Customer accounts for faster ordering
  • Mobile-optimized checkout process
  • Cart recovery
  • Google AMP and Akamai
  • Filter options
  • Coupons and discounts
  • Advanced inventory management
  • Customer groups for a personalized shopping experience
  • Over 65 payment gateways with no additional transaction fees
  • Built-in shipping management

In addition, all plans include unlimited products, unlimited file storage, bandwidth and employee accounts.

You have the choice between 12 free mobile-responsive design templates with which you can turn your online shop into a real eye-catcher without any programming.

BigCommerce offers four pricing plans (each with a 15-day free trial):

  1. Standard - $ 29.95 per month ($ 50,000 annual sell limit)
  2. Plus - $ 79.95 per month ($ 180,000 annual sell limit)
  3. Pro - $ 299.95 per month ($ 400,000 annual sell limit)
  4. Enterprise - price on request

For small businesses and new online stores, BigCommerce is not the best choice. However, this platform is the ideal solution for established companies and large shops.

# 4 - Shopify - Review: The Best All-in-One Solution

Shopify is another all-in-one e-commerce website builder that is already used by over a million online stores, making this e-commerce builder the most popular solution on our list.

Shopify is not as flexible as Wix, but it has better e-commerce functions because this kit was specially designed for online shops. In addition, this platform has the ideal balance between flexibility and ease of use.

Its versatility makes Shopify the ideal solution for small and large online shops. The e-commerce features it offers include the following:

  • POS systems for retail stores
  • Shipping costs for carriers in real time
  • Automatic cart recovery
  • 100 different payment gateways
  • Automatic tax calculation
  • Customer accounts and profiles
  • Fulfillment Center
  • Advanced inventory management
  • Unlimited products
  • Detailed analysis reports

Thanks to over 70 professional design templates (nine of which are free) and over 4,100 applications, creating a beautiful and functional online shop is child's play. You don't need any programming skills.

Round-the-clock customer support makes Shopify the ideal e-commerce platform.

Shopify has five pricing models for businesses of different sizes:

  • Shopify Lite - $ 9 per month
  • Basic Shopify - $ 29 per month
  • Shopify - $ 79 per month
  • Advanced Shopify - $ 299 per month
  • Shopify Plus - price on request

Shopify Lite allows you to embed a “Buy” button in an existing website, but without a website builder.

Payment processing takes place on Shopify, so depending on the plan, 2.4% to 2.9% + 0.30 euros transaction fees apply. If you use another payment provider, e.g. B. want to use PayPal or Square, there are again between 0.5% and 2% additional fees.

# 5 - WooCommerce - Review: The Best Platform for WordPress Websites

So far I've focused on website builders. My next recommendation, WooCommerce, is a plug-in for WordPress that gives your WordPress website great e-commerce functionalities.

WooCommerce is used by around 30% of the currently existing online shops, which makes the plug-in one of the most popular e-commerce solutions on my list with over 80 million downloads.

Note: If your website was not built with WordPress, this plug-in is not recommended. In this case, you'd better choose an e-commerce kit.

The plug-in does not slow down your website and has numerous functions for accepting online payments, configurable shipping options, product lists and more. But you need an existing WordPress website to use the plug-in.

Here is a small overview of the ecommerce features included:

  • Plug-in extensions for more functionality
  • API interfaces for developers to create custom platforms
  • Extensive tutorials and additional material
  • 140 region-specific payment gateways
  • Support of subscriptions and deposits
  • Automated tax calculations
  • Shipping costs calculation in real time
  • Mobile apps for iOS and Android
  • Suitable for physical and digital products
  • Endless product variants
  • Public forum

And do you know what is the best? The plug-in is completely free!

However, the plug-in extensions are chargeable.

The personalization options of WordPress are almost endless, which is why you can freely design and adapt your online shop with WooCommerce according to your wishes.

The plug-in is unfortunately not intuitive and very complicated to use, so it is only recommended if you are 100 percent familiar with WordPress and feel comfortable.

No. 6 - OpenCart - Rating: The best platform selling digital products

OpenCart is an open source platform for e-commerce, like WooCommerce. This platform is not limited to WordPress websites, however, you still need an existing website to use this solution.

Over 300,000 online shops use OpenCart for the sale of all kinds of products. Most web hosting providers enable quick installation with one click or even do the installation for free.

Note: I would only recommend this solution if you already have a website.

The easy-to-use (and free) user interface makes it easy to sell digital products and makes making money from an online shop a tangible goal.

OpenCart is free and ready to use right out of the box with no hidden fees.

Here is a brief overview of the most important features:

  • Simple and central admin dashboard
  • Advanced user roles and access control
  • Manage multiple stores from a single dashboard
  • Limitless product variables and variations
  • Built-in affiliate program and loyalty system
  • Discounts and vouchers
  • Unlimited products
  • One click digital downloads
  • Product reviews
  • 36 built-in payment methods
  • Recurring payments

Thanks to over 13,000 modules and design templates, you can add new functions to your shop as you wish, including: Service integrations, conversion modules, email marketing and more.

However, you should keep in mind that some OpenCart extensions are chargeable and that you have to pay extra for certain functions.

Also, there is no free customer support.

If you can't find the answer in the forum, you'll have to pay for a personalized consultation. The consultation costs either $ 99 per month or a one-time fee of $ 99 to fix a single problem.

# 7 - Ecwid - Review: The best solution for integrating with pre-existing platformen

Ecwid is another e-commerce solution that can be integrated into an existing platform.

It can be used with Weebly, Wix, WordPress, Squarespace and more, making it the ideal solution for websites that want additional e-commerce functions.

Ecwid also has a website builder in case you want to build a new site. However, I would recommend a different kit for building a new website.

I recommend Ecwid if you already have a website and want to add an online shop to it.

This e-commerce platform has tons of great features, including:

  • Multi-channel sales (social media, online marketplaces, retail stores, etc.)
  • Integrated email marketing and advertising functions
  • Centralized inventory and order management
  • No transaction fees
  • Responsive designs
  • POS integrations
  • Customer accounts for faster orders
  • Shipping cost calculator
  • Product variants
  • Sale of digital products
  • 40 payment options

The main disadvantage is that the orders cannot be managed from your website's dashboard. You'll need to sign in to Ecwid and manage two separate accounts.

But there is also good news. You can try Ecwid right away and use it for free.

The free access allows the creation of up to ten products. If you want to sell more products, you'll need to upgrade. Ecwid offers three pricing plans:

  • Venture - 15 euros per month (for up to 100 products)
  • Business - 35 euros per month (for up to 2,500 products)
  • Unlimited - 99 euros per month (unlimited products)

However, if you're looking to build a new website, I would recommend Wix or Shopify.

For an existing website, Ecwid is a welcome alternative to WooCommerce and OpenCart.

Summary

I would recommend Wix to most companies because this kit is also suitable for users with no prior knowledge. In addition, this e-commerce solution is flexible, customizable and affordable. If you need less flexibility and prefer ease of use, Squarespace would be the perfect alternative.

For large online shops, I recommend BigCommerce or Shopify.

For existing websites, WooCommerce, OpenCart or Ecwid are suitable, depending on which system the website was built with.
