American aviation authorities have proposed rules for certification of supersonic aircraft

The Federal office of civil aviation released the draft rules of certification of a supersonic passenger aircraft and requirements for noise. Thanks to the new document, if it comes into force, developers will be able to obtain certificates types on their supersonic passenger planes and start their full-fledged flight tests. While the proposed rules until the existing restrictions on supersonic flight over populated land and near the coast.

Today’s civil supersonic does not exist. In the 1970-ies was commissioned by the Soviet supersonic airliner Tu-144 and the French Concorde. First in passenger transport was used for just under a year and the second until 2003. Both aircraft were written off in particular because of the high cost of tickets for flights. Today’s existing technology can make a supersonic aircraft with respect to economy, so the transportation is not expensive.

In addition, ongoing today, the development in the future will allow to design “quiet” supersonic aircraft, which will be allowed to fly over populated land. Ongoing studies show that by changing the shape of the airframe of a supersonic aircraft can reduce the intensity of the shock waves produced on its surface during supersonic flight. Under the proposed Federal aviation administration to draft regulations, proposed to introduce a new certification category, “Supersonic Level 1”. Under it will be subject to aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of not more than 68 tons, capable of flying at speeds no more than 1.8 Mach. The evaluation of aviation authorities, under this category fall most of the modern development of supersonic aircraft, maintained in the United States. In addition, for more severe or fast aircraft can be designed additional category.

Noise level supersonic aircraft is expected to surpass the current requirements of the standard Stage 4, but they will not fully meet the requirements of the new standard for Stage 5. First meet today a modern subsonic passenger planes. Stage 4 — American national standard that sets the noise level of the aircraft in the terminal area and 65 decibels in perceived level, that is, with the correction on the perception of noise by man.

The new draft regulation submitted to discussion of the airline industry for a period of 90 days, after which it will enter into force. The Federal aviation administration of the USA said that although the new rules and lift the ban on supersonic flights over populated part of the land, they will allow to certify the prototypes of supersonic aircraft and begin flight tests at subsonic speeds. Requirements to the noise level of supersonic aircraft when flying at supersonic speed are under development.

For the supersonic passenger aircraft Concorde, the indicator of perceived noise level was approximately 105 PNdB (Perceived Noise Level). NASA, on the order of which is developing a demonstrator of a supersonic passenger plane, is considered acceptable acoustic noise at supersonic speed at 75 PNdB. In this project, “quiet” supersonic aircraft developed by the order of NASA, provides for the establishment of the aircraft, the noise of which does not exceed 70 PNdB.

In January of this year it became knownthat the American startup Boom Supersonic concluded with a service company Flight Research agreement on the testing of demonstrator supersonic transport aircraft of the XB-1 in the Mojave desert. In particular, the service company will provide the flight XB-1 in a supersonic corridor over the Mojave with the support of the training aircraft T-38 Talon. Under the agreement, Flight Research will provide the Supersonic Boom your hangar for Parking of demonstrator XB-1 for the duration of the test. In addition, the company organizes training for test pilot XB-1 training aircraft T-38.
