Hippocrates, the famous physician of antiquity, believed that the air — “pneuma” — a source of spread of disease. Air contains “disease-causing miasmas”, inhaling which, a person becomes ill. But as to be protected from the air impossible, Hippocrates and his followers were advised to change their place of residence.
Here he writes, for example, one of the Pseudo-Hippocratic (the name of Hippocrates has signed a variety of medical treatises):
But when the disease any will act epidemicus, then it is obvious that not a way of life cause of her, but the fact that we introduce into ourselves the breath, and, obviously, that this is the last hurt us in some painful consists in this selection.
