Germany and France will develop a new generation tank

Germany and France signed an agreement on joint development of main battle tank of the new generation, which in the future will replace the ageing Leopard 2 and Leclerc. As reports Defense Aerospace, the new project received the name of MGCS (Main Ground Combat System, the basic ground combat system).

Under the agreement, the parties in the next two years will define the technical requirements for the prospective machines. Project funding the parties will conduct equally. To complete the development of a new main battle tank is planned for the middle of 2030-ies.

German tank Leopard 2 was developed in the early 1970’s and entered service with Germany in 1979. Since then the car has several upgrades. The latest version of the tank is Leopard 2A7. It was introduced in 2010.
