Promisingn nuclear-powered icebreaker “Arktika” project 22220 23 June 2020 came to the final stage of sea trials. According to the message of the Baltic plant, the stage of checks will last for three weeks. Test during which the experts will check the operation of all systems of the icebreaker will be held in the Gulf.
Before taking into operation of any vehicle or vessel must undergo several types of tests. The first tests are mooring. At this time, the ship may not yet be fully completed but it is already launched and started to carry out basic checks of all installed units and systems.
After the mooring trials the ship passed the sea trials. In this case, it goes into the sea where experts check in real conditions of work on-Board systems, is the vehicle defined by the project characteristics, including speed, stability and propulsion.
During the final stage of sea trials experts will check the operation of the steam turbine, electric propulsion systems, deck machinery, and speed and maneuvering capabilities of the vessel. After testing, the icebreaker will return to the Baltic plant. To enter the ship into operation is planned before the end of 2020.

The icebreaker of project 22220 belongs to the class LK-60Я (powered Icebreaker capacity of 60 megawatts with a Nuclear facility). Icebreakers type “Arktika” will be expected to work in the Barents, Pechora and Kara seas and in shallow areas of the Yenisei estuary in the Gulf of Ob
The displacement of the Arctic is 33.5 thousand tons with a length of 173,3 meters, width of 34 meters and a height of 15.2 meters. The ship made its double-draft with a minimum draught of 8.55 meters and a maximum of 10.5 m. With a deep draft ship will be able to break through the thick ocean ice, and when small — to ships on frozen rivers. The icebreaker will be able to reach speeds up to 22 knots in clean water.
The icebreaker “Arktika” is equipped with two reactor RITM-200 with capacity of 175 MW each. The reactors generated by the integrated circuit in which a steam generator 4 placed in the housing of the active zone. This solution allowed to reduce the size of the reactors and reduce the risk of leakage from the primary circuit. Power icebreaker “Arctic” on the shafts is 60 megawatts each reactor provides 30 megawatts.
The main operator of the new icebreaker will be the state Corporation “Rosatom”. In addition to “Arctic” for the state Corporation will build four more icebreaker of project 22220, two of which — “Siberia” and “Ural” — already launched.
