How does it work?

The effect itself is called “bioluminescence” — is a nonthermal glow in the living system. Glowing fireflies, some deep-sea fish, fungi, bacteria. The glow is due to the oxidation of molecules of luciferin by the enzyme luciferase. In total there are about 40 of bioluminescent systems, including seven different types luciferase.
