Martian drone was named “Ingenuity”

Unmanned helicopter for future NASA mission “Mars-2020” was named “Ingenuity” (Ingenuity, Resourcefulness). It was selected from 28 thousand applications sent to American schoolchildren, and originally may have been intended, the Rover, which will take drone to Mars, reported on the website NASA.

The task of the drone is the Mars Helicopter will be the study of hard to reach places on Mars, such as steep cliffs, caves and deep craters, and to test the operability of such devices in the rarefied atmosphere of the planet in the framework of the program “Mars-2020”. The weight of the aircraft is 1.8 kg, it is equipped with a color camera, navigation system and data transmission and batteries, podzaryadki from solar panels. The drone uses two coaxial bearing contrariwise screw with a diameter of 1.2 meters each. In mid-April, a drone was mounted on the lower part of the body of the Rover “Perseverance,” with which will go to Mars 17 July 2020.

At the end of August last year, NASA launched a competition to select a name for the Rover was received on 28 thousand essays from students from all States of the USA. In March 2020 was announced the results, after which the Agency decided to give the name and Drona. To do this, all essays were reviewed again and the final selection was made Director of NASA, James Breidenstein. The helicopter was named “Ingenuity” (Ingenuity, Resourcefulness) were invited by the schoolgirl of the 11th class Unicoi Rupani (Vaneeza Rupani), which is considered, what exactly this name fully reflects the work of engineers who designed and built such a device, able to take off from the surface of Mars.

Soft landing of a Rover to a drone in the area of the crater Lake to be held on 18 February 2021. Within a few months after landing the helicopter will remain in a protective capsule, while the Rover will search for him a comfortable working area. He will then leave there and the drone will drive off at least a hundred meters. After that, the helicopter will make trial of a 30-second lift to three meters, and then carry out five long-haul flights, which will climb to a height of several hundred meters. The whole flight campaign will take 31 earth day. If all goes well, NASA will begin to develop more sophisticated drones for exploring other planets.

Earlier we talked about the mission of the Dragonfly, in which 2034 on Saturn’s moon Titan to land on oktokopter, and how NASA proposed to use the Rovers as a nest for drones.
