Meeting with DMT-“entities” compared with religious experience

Online survey 2561 people ever consumed N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), showed that feelings during the “session” and its impact on the psyche similar to the feelings of religious revelations and experiences of alien abductions, reported in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. DMT researchers have long said about this, but a new survey — the most extensive confirmation of their point of view.

N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) — the psychedelic drug whose intake often causes visions of “entities” (entities) — elves, dwarves, gods and other animate beings that often defies description. The “essence” often remind the characters of the stories about religious revelations or alien abductions (possibly even from other universes and dimensions), and the reaction on their appearance include a feeling of enlightenment. This is evidenced by numerous descriptions of DMT-“trip”, but they had almost not systematized. Meanwhile, for the full scientific study effects of N,N-dimethyltryptamine and how often, in fact, his “users” are seen different creatures, this is what you need to do.

Alan Davis (Alan Kooi Davis) from the Medical school of Johns Hopkins University and his colleagues from the University of California at Davis conducted an online survey of adult English-speaking volunteers (a total of 2561 people, average age 32 years, 77% men) who ever breathed DMT and saw after this “entity”. In this long survey, the filling of which lasted an average of 39 minutes, the Respondent had to briefly talk about the experience of accepting that he remembered the most, and then to answer specific questions: how the process has changed the perception of the world through different senses, which has shown emotions during the DMT and after, who began the contact entity or person, how good was the creature, if it can meet in the real world, and so on.

Most often, the respondents mentioned that when meeting with “beings” they used vision and “psychic” senses like telepathy. On the same say, and the witnesses of divine revelation and alien abduction, not being under the influence of psychedelic. 41 percent of respondents said that they experienced fear, during a meeting with “beings”. However, the prevailing emotions were joy and happiness. 69 percent of participants said that they had received from the DMT beings a message, and in 19 percent of cases — the prediction of the future.

96 percent of participants acknowledged that the “essence” have consciousness. 78 percent talked about the generosity of the DMT beings, the 70 of their sacred nature, 52, that they are positive towards people. Many claimed that the meeting with the “entities” forever changed them, the people began to get more pleasure from life, see it makes more sense, 70 percent of them had improved relationships with others, 84 — self-esteem. Interestingly, more than half of respondents who considered themselves agnostics or atheists to take a break from the “creatures” after a particularly impressive DMT-trip admitted the possibility of the existence of God or a higher power. All these makes the DMT-trip with the religious experience.

Through the questionnaire, which allowed to systematize experiences from encounters with “entities”, to analyze the effect of N,N-dimethyltryptamine and in detail to compare its effects with the effects of other events easier. Although the above-described positive effects DMT-“trip”, they are not always. First, someone may consider the passion of the human religion as the departure from the true picture of the world. Second, more importantly, about 20 percent of respondents DMT-the”essence” seemed evil and threatening, and the hallucinations any emotion can be expressed so strongly that it will leave a deep wound on the psyche.

In recent years, neuropsychopharmacology actively explore whether it is possible to use DMT and other psychedelics for treating depression, post-traumatic stress syndrome and other diseases if they occur in the severe and not amenable to conventional medical treatments. Although in General the results of these studies point to the fact that under controlled circumstances, psychedelics can be used successfully for therapeutic purposes (for example, in 2018, the FDA allowed the use of psilocybin as a “breakthrough therapy” for treating depression), not all take this opportunity. Recently, the us payment system PayPal refused to handle donations of citizens, which was supposed to go to Fund studies of psilocybin, as it is against the principles of the company.
