Space Observatory SOHO opened his 4,000 th on the account near the sun the comet. This has been done by civilian scientists who study images of the Sun received by the Observatory every day, it is reported on the website NASA.
Observatory SOHO was launched on 2 December 1995 and is on a halo orbit around the Lagrange point L1 in the system “Earth — Sun”. Its task is continuous monitoring of solar activity and studies of the corona, the solar wind and the inner layers of our star.
Every day the Observatory has a large number of images of the Sun in multiple spectral ranges, which are subsequently laid in the open access of civil and studied by scientists. For 25 years the Observatory was discovered four thousand circumsolar comets: basically, with the help of the coronagraph LASCO (Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph), which uses the technique of blocking the solar disk, allowing you to see a crown of stars.
Opening the 4,000 th of the comet took place on 15 June 2020, is made a citizen scientist Trygve of Prestegard (Trygve Prestgard) studying pictures of the Sun in the framework of the project “Sungrazer”. The comet, designated SOHO-4000, belongs to the family of Kreutz, and the size of its nucleus is estimated at 4-10 meters.
It is worth noting that every June there is a surge of discoveries of comets made at the SOHO database: all because of a good position that allows you to see the reflected cometary tails the light of the Sun. Thus, in the period from 1 to June 9, 2020, the Observatory has discovered 17 comets, which is about twice the typical rate of detections.
Earlier we talked about how astronomers turned into sound oscillations and vibrations in the outer layers of the Sun, was Observatory SOHO.
