Floating nuclear power station “Academician Lomonosov” September 9, 2019 arrived at the RAID of Pevek in Chukotka. As writes Mil.Press FlotProm, the station came to the destination a little earlier than planned. In the near future we plan to start work on connecting the station to the shore infrastructure.
A full-fledged nuclear power plants in remote regions is extremely difficult and can lead to major expenses. Floating nuclear power plants solve this problem, supplying heat and electricity to the coastal areas.
In the project of a floating nuclear power plant started to develop in the mid 2000-ies. The ship “Akademik Lomonosov” was founded in 2007. It is equipped with two pressurized water reactor KLT-40C with electric power up to 35 MW each and heat capacity of 150 megawatts.
Power plant “Akademik Lomonosov” was completed afloat in mid-summer 2019 and on August 23 it has been towed from Murmansk, where the reactor vessel is loaded with nuclear fuel, to Pevek in Chukotka. As expected, the “Akademik Lomonosov” will start operating in late 2019. The ship will be able to replace nuclear Bilibino and Chaun thermal power plant.
In 2017, then experts started development of the project of the vessel of atomic-technological service. It will be used to recharge the reactors of the floating power station “Academician Lomonosov”, as well as reactors of nuclear icebreakers.
