Chinese doctors and have not found the new coronavirus in newborns whose mothers during pregnancy were sick COVID-19. The description of these patients was published in Frontiers in Pediatrics. Although the article discusses all four cases, it is likely that the virus, in principle, is not transmitted from pregnant women to children.
Apparently, the main known route of transmission of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 — airborne, and until proven that people without respiratory symptoms can infect others. Also it is not clear whether the virus be transmitted from mother to child in the womb.
Employees of United hospital of Wuhan (Wuhan Union Hospital) followed four infants who were born at the medical center in women with PCR confirmed diagnosis COVID-19. Three mothers gave consent to have their children tested for the presence of coronavirus infection. The fourth SARS-CoV-2 were not detected but recorded how he feels and whether he has the typical symptoms.
At the time of admission to hospital, all four women showed signs COVID-19: fever (three), cough, muscle pain, weakness (each symptom two). All had increased levels of C-reactive protein (a sign of inflammation) and reduced number of lymphocytes (<1,1 × 109/liter). The partner of one of the women were also infected with coronavirus.
With one exception, women have not experienced the impact COVID-19 directly on pregnancy. Only one reported that fetal movements she has become more rare. The three spent a caesarean section, one child born in the usual way. All were born at term (37-39 weeks) and weighed 3000 grams or more.
Because of illness of mothers of all children (three boys and one girl) from isolated and transferred to artificial feeding. They all had high scores (7-9) Apgar at 1 and 5 minutes after birth. Two newborns were perfectly healthy. The other two were observed a rash of unknown origin, but it is several days passed without treatment. One of them had a rapid shallow breathing, but after three days on CPAP (the lung) it is normalized.
Samples for the detection of coronavirus in children were taken from the nasopharynx in three days after birth. All came back negative. Fever, cough, diarrhea in infants was not observed. At discharge, no mother, no children (including a child who was tested for the presence of SARS-CoV-2) did not show signs of infection. For the totality of these data the authors decided that the transfer COVID-19 pregnant children unlikely: she probably doesn’t even happen.
Previously doctors from another hospital of Wuhan retrospectively analyzed the status of nine patients COVID-19 pregnant women and their children. They found no cases of transmission to newborns. However, the research was focused on coronavirus infection in the last trimester of pregnancy, not as babies.
Children COVID-19 rarely severe. As found by scientists from the Medical University of Guangzhou, in young patients with coronavirus infection may not have fever and cough, but the RNA of SARS-CoV-2 they identify in the feces for a long time after infection.
