Smart watches have been taught to read drawing with the stylus on the arm

German engineers have taught the usual smart watch to detect movement of the magnetic stylus over the outer side of the brush and touching it. This makes the management interface on a small screen hours much more convenient and allows to use interface even small elements of larger devices. The article will be presented at the conference CHI 2020.

Smart watches have the potential to serve as a complete replacement for the smartphone, at least for a short time, for example Jogging. Many models already can make calls and receive notifications, to store music and play it back through headphones and also to call a taxi. But despite the fact that, in General, these devices are already highly developed and technologically advanced, their remains a common drawback: it is difficult to make easy control on the screen, the size of which is comparable to the size of a finger.

Researchers in the field of human-computer interaction there are some interesting solutions, the most notable of them are similar to each other that use the skin near the clock as a large input area, but do it in different ways. Some engineers propose to touch the skin and read the gestures using a sensor on the watch, and the other two groups (1, 2) made the prototype of the watch with a projector that displays the interface on the hand reader clicking on it.

A group of German developers from the University of Hannover name of Leibniz under the direction of Michael Rosa (Michael Rohs) also suggested to use the hand as a touch surface, but not for finger and stylus. Interestingly, in previous similar developments has been used, modified or assembled “from scratch” smart watches equipped with the new sensors. The authors of the new article was used already in smart watches with a magnetometer.

In a makeshift stylus is a permanent magnet, and the touch sensor at the end to determine the contact with the skin. The magnetometer is capable of hours after calibration to determine the position of the magnet relative to hours. Tests showed that the positioning accuracy is distributed unevenly on the surface of the hands: it depends on the position of the magnet relative to the hours and at the most remote point of the working area is six percent.

The developers have created for hours of graphic editor with many functions, which can be controlled with the stylus. The authors conducted a study of volunteers in which they had to draw lines and symbols using the stylus and your finger on the screen. The study showed that the stylus allows you to draw the same objects faster and more accurately.

Because of the small screen size of smart watches not only have problems with input and with output. As a solution, engineers propose to use the projectors, and recently, other engineers from Germany proposed to equip additional smart watch screens in the strap.
