The American company Lockheed Martin has tested the advanced hypersonic tactical missile launch at a target at short range. According to the message of the company, testing of ammunition, took place at the site “white Sands” in new Mexico. The missile was launched at a target at a distance of about 85 kilometers.
Missile test PrSM shooting at short distance is performed to test the systems of the munition in terms of rigid overload. They are caused by the maneuvering of the munition at a relatively short distance and at high speed flight.
In order to minimize the number of maneuvers and not to resort to reduce the speed of the munition, which could make it vulnerable to interception by anti-ballistic missile systems, PrSM on a short distance can be run at a high ballistic trajectory.
Test launch PrSM short distance was made on 30 April 2020. He became the third run of the test program of the munition. The missile was launched using reactive systems of volley fire M142 HIMARS. PrSM struck designed for the purpose.
PrSM is developed as the replacement of obsolete munitions tactical complexes ATACMS, which is currently equipped with missiles with cluster warheads. In addition, the military is considering the possibility of using new ammunition for reactive systems of volley fire M270A1 MLRS and M142 HIMARS.
The new missile PrSM will be able to fly at a speed greater than 5 Mach numbers and in the first stage, to hit targets at ranges of up to 499 km. Later the range of the munition increases. Testing of the munition began in December 2019. Then the munition hit the target at the distance of 240 kilometers. During the second test in March, the distance was 180 miles.
