EndeavourRX from the company Akili is designed for children from 8 to 12 years with attention disorders in the syndrome of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): previously, researchers have shown the effectiveness of games in five clinical trials involving more than 600 patients. Read more about the solution reported in the press release the FDA.

ADHD is one of the most common disorders among children of primary school age and adolescents: according to estimates, it is diagnosed about five percent of the people. On the neurological foundations of ADHD not much is known, although it is believed that its pathogenesis play a role in disrupting the synthesis of serotonin and dopamine — that’s why drug treatment of the disorder involves administration of psychostimulants.

However, most often to treat ADHD still use psychotherapy as behavioral manifestations of the disorders (poor concentration and impulsivity) give patients the most trouble. Also can be effective cognitive training — in particular against the violations of concentration of attention. As children with ADHD can be difficult to convince of the need for training and therapy, they are often present in the form of games.

One of those games a few years ago introduced the company Akili: their runner (a sub-genre of platforming) EndeavourRX the player needs to run across the field and carry out tasks (e.g., catching characters only or a certain color to avoid obstacles. A recent report on clinical study of the effectiveness of the game, published in the Lancet Digital Health in April of this year, the researchers reported that children with ADHD that month played EndeavourRX for 25 minutes each day, focus actually improved (in comparison with the control group).

On the basis of clinical effectiveness game the FDA has given permission for the use of games in therapy: it is now officially available to register children with ADHD in the United States, and the company will be able to use the labeling efficiency and safety in advertising the game. The game itself is FDA classified as a treatment with “low or medium risk to health”: this approval process was simplified. Among the side effects the organization and the researchers said the headaches and negative emotional reaction.

However, as noted by the researchers in their reports and on the official website, the game can not be a substitute therapy, which was prescribed to the child’s doctor (including both medication and psychotherapy): EndeavourRX still effective against one particular symptom of disorders of attention.

Among the factors that affect the development of the child’s ADHD, there are also and lifestyle of their parents: two years ago, scientists showedthat children of Smoking parents and parents with depression, the chances of developing the disorder is higher.
