The German company Dornier Seawings conducted the first flight test aircraft-amphibian Seastar CD2 the new generation. As writes Flightglobal, the duration of the first flight of the aircraft with a tandem engine arrangement amounted to 31 minutes. The tests took place on 28 March 2020, and was deemed successful.
Basic amphibian Seastar was developed in the first half of the 1980-ies. The first flight he made in August 1984. The plane almost completely passed flight program, but serial production was never started. One reason for this was the bankruptcy of two companies-developers — Claudius Dornier Aircraft and Dornier Composite Aircraft.
In 1991 Dornier Seawings has received several contracts for the supply of amphibians Seastar customers in the US and Europe, but these orders were never executed. In total, the program Seastar was collected by two aircraft.
Seastar has a length of 12.7 meters and a wingspan of 17.7 meters. The aircraft has a maximum takeoff weight of 4.6 tons and is designed to carry 12 passengers. The aircraft is able to fly at the speed of 330 kilometers per hour.
A distinctive feature of the Seastar is a nacelle mounted over the wing in which the tandem is equipped with two turboprop engines with tractor and pusher propellers. This solution allows to reduce fuel consumption by increasing the propeller thrust and reducing drag. This phenomenon is called the effect of Bartini.
Development of amphibious aircraft Seastar CD2 is 2016 and, in fact, is a continuation of the closed in the 1990-ies the basic program. Advanced aircraft of digital avionics systems Honeywell Primus Epic 2.0, composite landing gear and airframe, hydraulic actuator, nose landing gear, five-blade composite propellers and water-jet propulsion device in the tail area.
Maximum takeoff weight Seastar CD2 is 5.1 tons. The aircraft is able to fly at the speed of 330 kilometers per hour to a distance of 1.7 thousand kilometers. The development of the Seastar CD2 is carried out in several variants, including a 12-seat passenger, cargo and VIP.
In September of last year it became knownthat then defense Ministry decided to resume the project of the development of amphibian A-40 “Albatross”, is considered the world’s largest aircraft in its class. In the course of finalizing the project, the aircraft will be upgraded. Armed with the A-40 is planned to be used as a universal anti-submarine and rescue aircraft.
