The prototype Starship SN5 passed the first test firing

The prototype Starship SN5 fully passed the first test firing. This is the first successful burn of the rocket from the beginning of may: then the first fire test was a prototype SN4 — however, he exploded during the second test at the end of may. In the near future, SpaceX also plans to make the jump SN5 150 meters, announced on Twitter by Elon Musk.

Starship is a next-generation rocket that will be reused not only the first step and the second — with integrated ship. The system will allow orbit more than a hundred tons of cargo, after which it will be possible to refuel a tanker is a modified version of the second stage. In addition to the large inferred mass, SpaceX promises to lower the cost of rocket launch (several times less than the current Falcon 9), and NASA has already chosen a modified version of the system to deliver cargo and astronauts to the moon. The main goal of Elon musk is sending humans to Mars in 2024.

The development of a Starship comes with varying degrees of success, passed tests interspersed with explosions. In early may the previous prototype SN4 passed test firing, and then exploded after the second attempt at the end of the month. The complexity of design adds the use of methane as fuel: none serial rocket yet never on it did not fly.

On the night of 31 July, SpaceX successfully completed a full burn SN5. Also Elon Musk announced the imminent test flight of 150 meters, the same who a year ago made Starhopper — a simplified version of the system.

SpaceX plans to accelerate work on Starship redirecting it to the project engineers freed after a successful flight of the spacecraft Crew Dragon to ISS. In addition, the company recently set a record for speed reuse of the first stage of the Falcon 9, running it again after 51 days after landing.
