German scientists have analysed the impact of millisecond deviations from the rhythm a sense of swing in jazz music. 160 musicians of different levels appreciated swingvote jazz compositions with deviations from the rhythm without them. Most swingover was no microetching and, therefore, their presence in the composition is not an integral part of the swing, write the scientists in the journal Nature.
“What is swing?” — the so-called Preface to “the Big book of swing,” in which bill Treadwell answers the question quite vague: “You can feel it, but you just can’t explain it.” In 1937, musicologists defined the notion of swing as almost imperceptible acceleration, with an emphasis on the second and fourth lobe. Most of the musicians with such formulation do not agree. They believe that it’s not so much the rhythm as in the emotional response of the musician for the song.
Such definitions do not suit scientists who have not lost hope to explain the concept of swing in scientific terms. One of the main hypotheses — the sense of swing occurs because of the small time deviations in the reproduction of music. For example, the performer plays a note simultaneously with the metronome beat, and a few milliseconds later it. According to experts, if the drummer, bassist and pianist play with a barely noticeable inaccuracies, they combine to create a feeling of swing.
Studies of other genres of music have shown that microorganisma don’t make music better. However, their use in jazz can be a feature of the genre. A group of German scientists under the leadership of George Darisa (George Datseris) from
Institute for dynamics and self-organization max Planck Society conducted an experiment designed to understand.
At the request of scientists, a professional pianist played 12 jazz compositions — they were recorded in MIDI format — to the accompaniment of rhythmically perfect bass and drums. Unlike the audio signal, MIDI stores information about the touch of the keys and pedals MIDI keyboard, not the sound of the instrument. So after recording a track, you can edit: add or delete notes, change their duration and pitch.
Azeris and the team created several versions of the songs after working on mikroorganizmami. The first option does not contain any delays (the scientists made kvantayz record), in the second embodiment, the duration of delay increased twice, and the third invert delay (delay to the metronome beat became after a delay, and Vice versa).
The original and edited versions listened to 160 musicians from different backgrounds and level of professionalism. They evaluated the degree of swingover songs on a four-point scale. The result was quite unexpected — the highest evaluation received alternative without microetching, therefore, their presence is not the main indicator of the swing. Variant with increased variance evaluated the original and the inverted deviation is almost not distinguished from the original.
