The U.S. Navy announced a competition for the development of small ship drones

The command of the US Navy will soon announce a tender for the development and production of prototypes of small ship drones, and conduct their tests. As reports Flightglobal, demonstration tests of technology solutions to participants of the competition will be held in late November — early December 2020 at the landfill in Yuma, Arizona.

One of the modern drones used by the us Navy is ScanEagle. This device has well recommended itself, however, has several disadvantages. In particular, to run the necessary pneumatic catapult that is positioned on the deck and arresting gear, the cable is strung on the mast for which the device engages the wing at the end of the flight.

According to the requirements of U.S. Navy new small drones should not need any special equipment for launch or landing. The device should be able to land with payload of not less than 11.3 kilograms and provide it with power not less than 300 watts.

The mission duration should be at least 12 hours, and the range of action at least 130 kilometers. The drone must be able to transmit video in day and night conditions, and communication with the management station must be encrypted. Other details about the requirements for drones the military did not disclose.

According to the tender results, the U.S. Navy may enter into with a company a contract to develop a new ship of the drone and its serial production. In this case, the value of the contract could amount to $ 1 billion.
